South African police have not commented on a video allegedly showing two Malawians being forced to have sex in front of a group of people.
The footage, which has been circulating on social media, appears to show a man and a woman inside a room in Olievenhoutbosch, south of Johannesburg, surrounded by several people.
One person appears to be holding a knife while others give instructions to the pair.
The two are then apparently forced to engage in a sexual act while being filmed on mobile phones.
A man speaking Chitumbuka can be heard appearing to say that they now have “proof” before the two are told to put on their clothes.
A Malawian resident in the area told Malawi Voice that the man and woman are both from Malawi’s northern Mzimba district.
The resident alleged that the woman’s husband had accused her of having an affair with the man and wanted evidence of their relationship.
According to the source, the woman had previously left her husband following alleged abuse, including beatings, restrictions on her movements and threats involving a knife.
The source said the woman later began living with another man, after which her husband allegedly searched for her and shared her photograph in social media groups asking people to report her whereabouts.
The resident further alleged that men hired by the husband later took the woman and the man from their home at night.
The man was allegedly asked to provide three cattle and four goats before the two were taken to the husband’s home, the source said.
The resident alleged that the woman had also been beaten before the incident and that they had seen her with a swollen lip.
It is not clear whether the South African Police Service has opened a case or whether anyone seen in the video has been arrested.
SAPS has not publicly commented on the footage.
