Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has called on Nigerians to exercise patience with President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, saying the President inherited a country burdened by longstanding fiscal and structural challenges, and about to collapse when he assumed office in 2023.
Mutfwang argued that the economic difficulties confronting the country did not begin with the Tinubu administration, insisting that Nigerians must consider the state of the economy at the time the President took over before assessing the impact of the ongoing reforms.
The Governor stated this on Monday while inaugurating the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections at the Government House, Rayfield, Jos.

He acknowledged the hardship occasioned by the economic adjustments but maintained that the reforms were necessary to address deep-rooted challenges, pointing to improvements in the country’s foreign reserves and fuel availability as indications of progress.
Mutfwang urged Nigerians to give the reforms time to yield results, stressing that the country’s economic recovery required sustained commitment and an understanding of the challenges inherited by the present administration.
“Where did President Tinubu meet Nigeria in 2023? He met Nigeria tottering on the brink of collapse; Nigeria that could not service its external debts; Nigeria that would not even allow businesses outside the country to take their proceeds back home. And that is why some international airlines stopped flying to Nigeria because they could not get the dollars to take back their money.
“Our external reserve was down to just a little over $3 billion, from the over $40 billion it had accumulated for decades. Today, by the grace of God, we have a healthy external reserve of over $50 billion,” the governor said.
The inauguration marked the commencement of coordinated mobilisation for the re-election of President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, as well as Governor Mutfwang, Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo and other APC candidates contesting National and State Assembly seats in Plateau State.
The Governor also highlighted measures taken by his administration to ease the economic burden on residents, including the introduction of Tin City Metro buses, revival of rail services within Jos metropolis, a 50 per cent reduction in tuition fees in state-owned tertiary institutions and a 300 per cent increase in student allowances.
He further acknowledged the benefits of the Federal Government’s student loan and scholarship interventions, which he said had supported Plateau indigenes studying in various universities.
On security, Mutfwang admitted that challenges persisted across Plateau State but assured residents that his administration remained committed to protecting lives and property.
He disclosed that plans were underway to facilitate the return of internally displaced persons to their ancestral communities, with another batch of retrained Operation Rainbow personnel and at least 800 trained forest guards expected to be deployed in vulnerable areas in the coming weeks.
Making a case for his administration’s second term, the Governor said governance was a continuous process, noting that his government needed another opportunity to consolidate ongoing projects and programmes.
“There is no government that ends everything. Every government is a relay. Our duty is not to make others look bad; it is to see how we can collectively make Plateau State look better,” he said.
He charged members of the campaign council to take the APC’s message to every community, emphasising that electoral success depended on effective grassroots mobilisation.
“The votes are in the polling unit. They are not in Jos. Everybody can only matter in the locality where you come from,” Mutfwang stated.
Earlier, the Director-General of the Mutfwang/Piyo 2027 Governorship Campaign Council, Sir Joseph Ari, pledged that the campaign would be factual, issue-based and peaceful, without bitterness or acrimony.
Ari disclosed that the council had received expressions of support from 115 support groups, alongside solidarity visits and assurances from traditional rulers, religious leaders, women, youths and other organised groups.
He said the council would rely on teamwork, strategic coordination and inclusive engagement to communicate its message across the state.
The Plateau State APC Chairman, Rufus Bature, described the inauguration as a significant step towards building a coordinated campaign structure, urging members to strengthen the party’s grassroots organisation and remain committed to their responsibilities.
Ari also called on party faithful and residents to turn out on November 14, 2026, to welcome President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, and other national party leaders during their scheduled visit to Plateau State.
