Jürgen Klopp has wasted little time putting his stamp on the Germany national team, reportedly introducing a series of rules designed to instil greater discipline, togetherness and focus within the squad.

According to German newspaper Bild, Klopp has overhauled the team’s daily routine, with new regulations covering mealtimes, mobile phone use, personal grooming and family access during major tournaments.

Among the more notable changes is a set dinner schedule. Players will be required to sit down together at either 7pm or 8pm, depending on the day’s programme — a measure aimed at building structure into the squad’s routine and ensuring time together away from the pitch.

Klopp has also reportedly banned mobile phone use before matches. With phones having transformed life at international camps — players can now remain connected to the outside world around the clock — the new rule seeks to carve out periods of genuine team interaction. The intention is straightforward: instead of scrolling, players talk to each other.

Team cohesion has always been central to successful tournament campaigns. Unlike club football, where players work alongside each other week in, week out, national teams must build trust and understanding in compressed windows. Klopp’s emphasis on communication reflects that reality.

Another rule, perhaps the most eyebrow-raising, concerns haircuts. Players will no longer be permitted to have their hair cut at the team hotel. Minor as it may seem, it signals the broader tightening of the squad’s environment.

Family access during major tournaments is also expected to be curtailed. Players will have fewer opportunities to receive relatives at the team base, though exceptions will be made in specific circumstances. The restriction is aimed at maintaining concentration during the most demanding phases of international competition.

Taken together, Klopp’s reported measures paint a picture of a coach who wants his players clear on what is expected of them — on and off the pitch. The emphasis on routine, discipline and collective spirit is consistent with the culture he built at club level throughout his career.

Germany have been through considerable transition in recent years. Klopp’s approach is not about penalising players but about establishing an environment that keeps the squad sharp when it matters most.

The phone ban before matches may prove the most consequential change of all. Rather than players retreating into their devices in the final hours before kick-off, the squad will be encouraged to speak with one another — conversations that could ease nerves, sharpen tactical understanding or simply reinforce team bonds.

With expectations surrounding Germany perpetually high and every detail of preparation subject to scrutiny, Klopp appears determined to leave nothing to chance.

Whether the new rules translate into results on the pitch remains to be seen. But the early signals suggest a coach who knows exactly the culture he wants to build — and is moving quickly to build it.
