Uganda’s Cricket Cranes got off to a winning start at the T20 World Cup Qualifiers in Abuja, Nigeria.
The Cricket Cranes began their journey to the 2028 T20 World Cup against Zambia, who were competing in their 1st ICC-sanctioned event since their reinstatement to the ICC family.
Riazat Ali Shah won the toss and elected to bat first. Charles Mushemeza, Anas Baig and Pius Oloka were the players to miss out of the playing XI for Uganda.
Robinson Obuya opened the batting with Raghav Dhawan, but the former failed to cash in, falling for a single-digit score, while his partner scraped around for his double digits before he departed.
Captain Riazat Ali Shah (38) contributed, but the innings was anchored by the in-form Gerald Olipa (82), who stroked a magnificent half-century, and while the wickets fell around him, he remained resolute and built the foundation that anchored the big total of 195/6 in the quota of 20 overs.

In the run chase, Joseph Baguma (4/44) was the pick of the bowlers; even though he leaked at least 11 runs every over, he was supported by Alpesh Ramjani, who was the most economical of the bowlers (2/13), and Juma Miyaji (3/17), putting in a shift as well.
Zambia was not good enough to challenge Ugandan bowling, and the difference in ranking between the two sides was evident.
The win puts Uganda in a good place for qualification because Zambia is one of the sides with the ability to crush a party amongst the competition in Abuja.
However, the Cricket Cranes ensured there was no danger against Zambia by doing the right things well.
Uganda return to action tomorrow when they take on Lesotho in the morning.
