Teodoro Obiang has ruled Equatorial Guinea for 47.3 years. That is almost four times as long as Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, who closes this list at 12.4 years. The top two, Obiang and Paul Biya, have held power for 91.3 years combined. That is twice as long as ranks 8 to 10 put together, at 45.3 years. Long rule is not spread evenly across Africa. The big nations are all absent. Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania have all changed leaders in the last few years. The long rulers cluster in smaller states.

Assoumani led the Council of State from 1999 to 2002, was president from 2002 to 2006, and has been president again since 2016.

The top 10 average almost 31 years in office. The top three alone total 133.9 years. Adama Barrow of The Gambia just misses the list at 9.8 years. Togo's Faure Gnassingbe left the presidency in May 2025 after 20 years, so he is not ranked. If monarchs were counted, King Mswati III of Eswatini would rank fifth, at 40.5 years.

Obiang is the longest-serving president in the world. He took power on 3 August 1979 in a coup that overthrew his uncle, Francisco Macias Nguema. He became president on 12 October 1982. Counting from the coup, he has ruled for 47.3 years. Counting only his time as president, it is 44.1 years. Either way, he is number one. He has won every election since multi-party politics returned in the 1990s. Oil money has made Equatorial Guinea rich per person on paper. Most citizens still live in poverty. Reuters reported in June 2026 that he remains in office.

2. Paul Biya, Cameroon, 44.0 years

Biya became president on 6 November 1982. He succeeded Ahmadou Ahidjo, who resigned. Biya turns 44 years in office on 6 November 2026, the day after this article is published. He is 82 years old. His son Denis Christel Sassou Nguesso is widely seen as his likely successor.

4. Yoweri Museveni, Uganda, 40.8 years

Museveni took Kampala on 29 January 1986. His National Resistance Army ended a five-year guerrilla war. He has ruled Uganda ever since, for 40.8 years. He won re-election in January 2026. In 1986 he famously said the problem of Africa was leaders who overstay in power. He is now 82. His son Muhoozi Kainerugaba commands the army. Uganda has had no other president in the lifetime of most of its citizens. The median age in Uganda is under 17.

5. Isaias Afwerki, Eritrea, 33.5 years

Afwerki has led Eritrea since independence in May 1993, for 33.5 years. He led the liberation movement that won independence from Ethiopia. Eritrea has never held a national election. It has no working constitution and no opposition parties. Afwerki is the only African leader on this list who has never faced voters. He fought a border war with Ethiopia from 1998 to 2000. He made peace with Ethiopia in 2018. Eritrea remains one of the most closed states in the world.

6. Ismail Omar Guelleh, Djibouti, 27.5 years

Guelleh became president on 8 May 1999. He succeeded Hassan Gouled Aptidon, Djibouti's first president. Guelleh has won five elections since. Djibouti is small, with about one million people. Its location at the mouth of the Red Sea makes it valuable. The United States, China, France and Japan all run military bases there. Guelleh has used that rent to stay in power. He is 78. His rule is the longest in the Horn of Africa.

7. Paul Kagame, Rwanda, 26.5 years

Kagame became president on 22 April 2000. He had led Rwanda in practice since 1994, when his Rwandan Patriotic Front ended the genocide. He was vice president and defence minister under Pasteur Bizimungu until 2000. He has won four elections since, each with more than 90 percent of the vote. Rwanda's economy has grown fast under his rule. Kigali is one of the cleanest capitals in Africa. Critics point to tight control of dissent and Rwanda's role in eastern DR Congo. He is 68.

8. Azali Assoumani, Comoros, 17.0 years

Assoumani is the most complicated case on this list. He first took power in a coup on 30 April 1999, as head of the Council of State. He was elected president in 2002 and served until 2006. He returned as president in 2016. He resigned briefly in 2019 to run again, then won. He won a fourth term in 2024. His total time as head of state is 17.0 years. Counting only his years with the title of president, it is 14.3 years. Either way he ranks eighth. He also chaired the African Union in 2023 and 2024.

9. Alassane Ouattara, Côte d'Ivoire, 15.9 years

Ouattara was sworn in on 4 December 2010. He had won the election, but Laurent Gbagbo refused to leave. A five-month crisis followed. Ouattara took full control in April 2011, after Gbagbo was arrested. He has won three elections since. Cote d'Ivoire is now one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa. It ranks among the largest economies in Africa. Its economy is the largest in French-speaking West Africa. Ouattara is 84. He won a fourth term in October 2025.

10. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Egypt, 12.4 years

El-Sisi became president on 8 June 2014. He had led the removal of Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, as defence minister. He won the 2014 election with 97 percent of the vote. He has won two more elections since. Egypt is the only big nation on this list. It has about 114 million people. It also tops our ranking of the most powerful countries in Africa. At 71, el-Sisi is the third youngest leader on this list, after Azali Assoumani (67) and Paul Kagame (68). His 12.4 years are less than a third of Obiang's 47.3. That gap shows how far the top of the list sits from the rest.

Methodology

This ranking covers sitting presidents only, as of 5 November 2026. It ranks total time as head of state, counting every stint. A leader who left office and returned has both periods added together. That is why Denis Sassou Nguesso ranks third at 42.6 years, not fifth at 29.0 years for his current stint alone. The same rule puts Azali Assoumani eighth at 17.0 years.

Hereditary monarchs are not ranked, because the title is about presidents. If they were counted, King Mswati III of Eswatini would rank fifth at 40.5 years, King Letsie III of Lesotho would rank sixth at 30.7 years, and King Mohammed VI of Morocco would sit just behind Ismail Omar Guelleh at 27.3 years. Former presidents are not ranked either. Togo's Faure Gnassingbe left the presidency on 3 May 2025 and is now President of the Council of Ministers. His 20 years as president would have ranked eighth.

Start dates are the dates each leader first took power as head of state. For Teodoro Obiang that is 3 August 1979, the date of the coup, not 12 October 1982, when he took the title of president. Counting only his time as president, he would still rank first at 44.1 years. For Isaias Afwerki the start is May 1993, when Eritrea became independent. Sources differ on the exact day in May 1993, but the year and month figures are the same. For Paul Kagame the start is 22 April 2000, when he became president. He had led Rwanda in practice since 1994, but Pasteur Bizimungu was president then.

Every figure was checked against two sources: the Wikipedia list of longest-serving presidents and a published 2026 ranking (Pulse Ghana or TalkAfricana). Day counts from the Wikipedia list match this article's figures for Biya, Sassou Nguesso, Guelleh, Kagame, Ouattara and el-Sisi exactly. Small gaps of three to four days for Museveni and Afwerki come from inclusive and exclusive day counting. They do not change any year or month figure. All derived claims in this article, including totals, averages and multiples, were recomputed from the final table values before publication.

An earlier edition of this ranking on this site, dated November 2016, listed Obiang at 37 years and included Jose Eduardo dos Santos of Angola and Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. Both have since left office. This 2026 edition replaces it with current figures.
