Bad News for Gachagua as Olekina Warns Politicians Against Idolising Him — Details

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has criticised some veteran politicians for what he describes as excessive admiration of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, arguing that such political behaviour could undermine their independence and influence.

In his remarks, Ledama suggested that some experienced leaders were making a serious mistake by treating Gachagua as an extraordinary political figure rather than engaging with him as an equal in the political arena.

The senator’s comments have added to the ongoing debate surrounding the direction of Kenya’s opposition politics and the growing influence of Gachagua as political leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has remained an influential figure in opposition politics, particularly in the Mt Kenya region. His political activities and statements have continued to attract attention from leaders seeking to establish stronger political alliances.

However, Ledama’s remarks raise questions about the relationship between political experience, individual leadership and the tendency of some politicians to rally behind influential personalities.

Veteran politicians have spent years building their political careers and establishing their own support bases. Consequently, the senator’s argument suggests that they should maintain their independence instead of allowing another leader to dominate their political decisions.

The comments could also attract reactions from politicians who support Gachagua’s leadership and believe he has an important role to play in uniting the opposition against President William Ruto.

As political realignments continue, the question of who should lead the opposition remains a major subject of discussion.

Ledama’s latest remarks are therefore likely to fuel further conversations about political loyalty, leadership and the balance of power within Kenya’s opposition camp.
