CDF projects to improve mobility in Nkhata Bay
AI summary
Communities in Usisya in Nkhata Bay North Constituency have expressed hope for improved mobility following the launch of nine projects under the 2026/27 Reformed K5 billion Constituency Development Fund (RCDF).
A community member Calvin Phiri said this on Thursday at Usisya Community Day Secondary School during the launch of the CDF projects presided over by Nkhata Bay North legislator Mackenzie Chipalamoto Nkhwazi (Democratic Progressive Party).
He said the rehabilitation of the estimated 104-kilometre Mzuzu-Bula-Usisya Road will significantly reduce travel difficulties for residents who spend long hours navigating the hilly terrain to reach Mzuzu City.
Said Phiri: “Travelling from Usisya to Mzuzu should take a short time, but because of the poor condition of the road, we spend many hours on the journey. The road has potholes and becomes slippery during the rainy season.

“Currently, travelling from Usisya to Mzuzu City costs about K30 000 while hiring a motorcycle can cost between K70 000 and K90 000 per person for a one-way trip.”
Nkhwazi said he was also pleased that the government had fulfilled its commitment to implement development projects in the constituency.
“One of the critical projects that people were waiting for is the Mzuzu-Bula-Usisya Road and today we are happy that we are ready to move forward with its implementation,” he said.
The legislator said the constituency will also acquire an ambulance for Chikwina Health Centre and a boat ambulance to improve access to healthcare services, particularly in communities that are accessible only by water.
In his remarks, Nkhata Bay district commissioner David Kayiwonanga Gondwe expressed satisfaction that the council had successfully launched about 34 projects across the district.
“Today, the people are happy, the chiefs are happy and the council is also relieved because road projects feature prominently in our District Development Plans,” he said.
The reformed CDF, raised from K200 million to K5 billion in the 2026/27 financial year, will support projects in the country’s 229 constituencies.
