Former Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) chairman Macharia Njeru has officially declared his candidacy for the presidency in the 2027 General Election, running on the Mwongozo Mpya Party ticket.
Njeru, a seasoned advocate who served as IPOA’s inaugural chairperson from 2012 to 2016, announced his bid on Monday, October 5, 2026, positioning his campaign around governance reform and economic recovery.
Addressing why professional figures often hesitate to enter politics, Njeru noted that staying out of public leadership leaves voters with limited, flawed choices.
“The journey begins. Today, I officially announce my bid for the Presidency of the Republic of Kenya,” Njeru stated.
Key Arguments and Concerns Raised
During his campaign launch, Njeru outlined several structural challenges facing the country:
- Public Service Shortfalls: He pointed out that 63 years post-independence, basic infrastructure remains lacking, with communities walking long distances for water and public hospital patients instructed to purchase basic supplies like medical gloves.
- Youth Unemployment: Referencing the 2026 African Youth Outlook report, Njeru highlighted that 91.5% of Kenyan youth work in informal jobs, noting that university and master’s degree graduates frequently resort to manual labor or security work.
- Fiscal Deficit and Economic Risk: The legal expert warned of potential economic instability, citing a widening budget deficit where national tax collections of Ksh2.8 trillion are offset by Ksh4.5 trillion in public spending, requiring Ksh1.5 trillion in additional borrowing.
- Leadership and Governance Deficits: Njeru criticized emotional voting patterns and government spending habits, arguing that supplementary budgets and fiscal wastage can be controlled without disrupting state operations.
Drawing from his 35 years of experience in commercial law and corporate leadership, including chairing bank boards in Rwanda and Uganda, Njeru stated that his combined background in the public and private sectors prepares him to restructure national governance.
He confirmed plans to roll out nationwide campaign tours under the Mwongozo Mpya banner.
