LIMPOPO — A live pangolin arrest at the Groblersbrug border has led to a 27-year-old Botswana national being remanded in police custody. Tholego Gaebolae is facing serious wildlife protection and immigration charges after being intercepted by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) while crossing the Limpopo River.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, at approximately 19:30. Members of the SANDF were conducting routine patrol duties along the Limpopo River, adjacent to the Groblersbrug Border Post, when they spotted a male suspect crossing the waterway from Botswana into South Africa.
Upon confronting the individual and requesting his passport, the suspect failed to produce the required travel documents. A subsequent search of his bag revealed a live pangolin, a species legally classified as a Specially Protected Wild Animal. Authorities note that the suspect was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the origin of the animal or his possession of the protected species.
Following the discovery, the suspect was immediately apprehended by the military personnel and handed over to Tom Burke Border Policing for processing.
Tholego Gaebolae made his first court appearance before the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 28 August 2026. He is formally charged with the possession of a Specially Protected Wild Animal and the contravention of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002.
The court has remanded the 27-year-old in police custody. His case has been officially postponed to 17 September 2026 to allow for further police investigations and a formal bail application.
