Ethiopian Airlines has launched a new direct freighter service between Addis Ababa and Chengdu in China, expanding its cargo network in Asia.
The Airline’s cargo and logistics business wing announced the new freighter service on Friday, saying “a new connection takes flight today” and it would open a direct cargo link between China and Africa.
The inaugural flight was welcomed with a colorful ceremony and water cannon salute upon arrival in Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province.
“The new air link will provide a strong boost to the trade and economic exchanges between western China and Africa,” Ethiopian Cargo and Logistics services said in a statement.
China remains as one of the most important markets for Ethiopian, the largest cargo network operator in Africa. The new Chengdu service follows the addition of Urumqi city to the airline’s cargo network in China last year.
Ethiopian Airlines operates more than 190 weekly flights to 27 destinations across Asia, including 83 weekly flights to 11 cities in China.
With over 145 modern aircraft and advanced temperature-controlled, tech-enabled cargo infrastructure, Ethiopian transports nearly 1 million tons of cargo annually across a global network of over 145 destinations.
