University Workers Protest Shortfalls in FG Arrears Payment

AI summary
University workers across Nigeria have raised concerns over discrepancies in the Federal Government’s payment of arrears under its 2026 agreement with unions, with reports of partial payments, unpaid allowances, and uncertainty about outstanding entitlements.
Findings across institutions revealed mixed experiences: while some universities confirmed receiving arrears, others said payments were incomplete or excluded certain categories of staff.
At the Federal University of Lafia, SSANU chairman Daniel Dajen said members received six months’ arrears instead of the eight months promised.
He accused the government of releasing funds without proper consultation. Similarly, at the University of Ilorin, SSANU chairman Falowo Naheem noted that while arrears were paid, allowances for health centre staff and other entitlements remained outstanding.
In contrast, workers at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, reported receiving nine months’ arrears, though inflation had eroded its value.
At the University of Benin, SSANU chairman Julius Idu confirmed eight months’ payment but insisted one month and other allowances were still owed.
Some institutions, including Bayero University Kano and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, reported partial payments, while workers in Jigawa State universities said they had yet to receive any alerts or official communication.
Union leaders across campuses urged the government to ensure transparency, full implementation of the agreement, and inclusion of all eligible staff.
At the Federal University Otuoke, ASUU chairman Professor Bruno Ikuli demanded disclosure of the total funds received and a breakdown of disbursements.
While some universities, such as Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi, reported up to 90 per cent implementation of financial components, many workers stressed that unresolved allowances, promotions, and salary increments must be addressed to restore confidence.
The situation has left staff divided between relief at partial payments and frustration over lingering shortfalls, with unions warning that incomplete implementation could reignite industrial unrest.
