Matthew Booth In Tears: Bafana Bafana Legend Break Down as Coach Shakes Mashaba Battles for His Life

Matthew Booth Pays Emotional Tribute to Shakes Mashaba as South African Football Celebrates His Lasting Legacy

Former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth has paid a heartfelt tribute to legendary South African football coach Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba, reflecting on the enormous influence the veteran mentor had on his career and the development of young footballers in the country.

Booth, who spent several formative years playing under Mashaba at various youth national-team levels, has described the former coach as a principled leader whose impact extended far beyond the football pitch. His tribute comes as South African football continues to recognise Mashaba’s remarkable contribution to the game amid ongoing concerns about his health.

The former defender recently addressed the Shakes Mashaba Legacy Golf Day at Ruimsig Country Club in Roodepoort, Johannesburg. The event was organised to celebrate Mashaba’s achievements and raise funds towards his medical care.

For Booth, the occasion was an opportunity to acknowledge a man who played a significant role in shaping his football journey and instilling important values in a generation of South African players.

One of the key qualities Booth highlighted was Mashaba’s willingness to stand by his principles rather than simply agree with those in positions of authority.

According to Booth, the coach’s firm approach and commitment to doing what he believed was right left a lasting impression on the players who worked under him.

He also praised Mashaba for surrounding himself with capable members of his technical team, highlighting the importance of strong leadership and succession planning in football.

Their relationship dates back to 1994, when Booth first encountered Mashaba during his early years in the national-team setup. The experience helped establish a bond that continued throughout Booth’s development as a footballer.

Mashaba became an important figure in Booth’s career, guiding him through several youth national-team campaigns and helping prepare him for the demands of international football.

One of the most memorable moments of their journey came during South Africa’s preparations for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

Under Mashaba’s guidance, the South African Under-23 team qualified for the tournament and subsequently produced a famous 3-1 victory over Brazil, featuring a young Ronaldinho.

The achievement remains an important moment in South African football history and demonstrated the potential of the country’s young talent on the international stage.

Beyond individual matches and results, Booth believes Mashaba’s greatest contribution lies in his ability to develop players, build team unity and encourage young footballers to believe in themselves.

The veteran coach has worked across different levels of South African football, earning recognition for his commitment to youth development and his belief in local talent.

Mashaba also led Bafana Bafana during different periods, including his return to the senior national team in 2014. During that spell, South Africa qualified for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.

However, Booth’s tribute was not limited to football achievements. He also acknowledged the personal sacrifices Mashaba’s family made during the coach’s years of national-team commitments, travelling and spending extended periods away from home.

The tribute carries added significance as Mashaba continues to face health challenges. His circumstances have prompted renewed calls for the football fraternity to support someone who dedicated decades of his life to developing South African football.

Booth’s message serves as a reminder that coaches are often remembered not only for trophies and victories but also for the lives they influence and the opportunities they create.

For Mashaba, that influence remains visible through the players he mentored and the generations of footballers who benefited from his guidance.

As South African football continues to celebrate his contribution, Booth’s emotional tribute reinforces the importance of recognising the country’s sporting heroes while they can still receive the appreciation they deserve.

Mashaba’s legacy is bigger than the results he achieved. It is reflected in the careers he helped shape, the standards he demanded and the lasting lessons he passed on to South African football.
