A toddler died under a collapsing wall at Otjiwarongo’s Ombili settlement on Friday.
The wall collapsed after it was allegedly struck by a reversing vehicle.
Police head of community Alaffairs in the Otjozondjupa region senior inspector Maureen Mbeha in a statement says the deceased was identified as Anna Gases (3).
Her next of kin have been informed of the incident.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Otjiwarongo Police Station against the driver of the vehicle that allegedly caused the wall to collapse.
Mbeha says preliminary police investigations indicate that the driver of the mini truck was reversing out of his yard when the vehicle’s spare wheel hooked onto the yard’s metal gate.
“The force caused the metal gate to topple, bringing down part of the boundary wall,” she says.
At the time of the incident, two children, aged three and six, were playing outside the yard next to the wall.
The wall collapsed onto the children, seriously injuring both of them.
Mbeha says the children were transported to Otjiwarongo State Hospital, where the girl later succumbed to her injuries.
The boy (6) remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
