30 years after Atlanta glory, Uba Sani honours Amokachi, Babayaro, Lawal

Thirty years after helping Nigeria secure its first Olympic football gold medal, three Kaduna-born members of the historic 1996 “Dream Team” have finally received recognition from their home state.

Governor Uba Sani on Tuesday awarded former Super Eagles stars Daniel Amokachi, Emmanuel Babayaro, and Garba Lawal with plots of land and street names in Kaduna.

The three former internationals were members of the Nigerian team that made history at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, United States.

Their visit to the Kaduna Government House was part of a courtesy call on Mr Sani, during which the governor recognised their contribution to Nigerian football and their role in the country’s historic Olympic triumph.

Atlanta miracle

Nigeria’s triumph at the 1996 Olympics remains one of the most celebrated accomplishments in African football.

The Nigerian team, popularly called the “Dream Team,” beat Mexico 2–0 in the quarter-finals before delivering one of the most remarkable comebacks in Olympic football history.

Against Brazil in the semi-final, Nigeria were trailing 3–1 before recovering to win 4–3 through a dramatic extra-time goal by Victor Ikpeba.

The victory paved the way for a showdown against Argentina.

Nigeria once again came from behind to beat the South Americans 3–2, with Emmanuel Amunike netting the winning goal in the final moments of the match.

The victory made Nigeria the first African country to win the Olympic men’s football gold medal.

It was also a pivotal moment for a generation of Nigerian footballers, many of whom went on to secure successful careers in Europe and with the national team.

Thirty years of waiting

Despite the historic achievement, the players said that promises made to them after their return from Atlanta remained unfulfilled for decades.

When we returned, the federal and state governments promised us a plot of land and a street name.

“Thirty years now, none were fulfilled,” Amokachi said on behalf of the other players

They, however, said the governor had now fulfilled the commitment at the state level by providing them with plots of land and naming streets after them in Kaduna.

The gesture is particularly significant because Amokachi, Babayaro and Lawal all have roots in Kaduna and represented both the state and Nigeria during their football careers.

Amokachi, popularly known as “The Bull,” was one of Nigeria’s most recognisable footballers of his generation. He played for clubs in Europe and was a key member of the national team during the 1990s.

Babayaro was one of the youngest members of the Atlanta squad and later enjoyed a successful career in England, particularly with Chelsea.

Lawal was also an important member of the Olympic-winning squad and the Super Eagles, representing Nigeria at major international competitions.

Their achievements were part of the golden era of Nigerian football, which also saw the country win the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 and make its FIFA World Cup debut that same year.

For Kaduna, the three players remain part of the state’s rich football heritage.

Mr Sani’s decision to honour them three decades after their Olympic triumph, therefore, goes beyond the allocation of land and naming of streets. It represents a formal recognition of a generation of athletes whose exploits brought international attention and pride to Nigeria and Kaduna.

The 1996 Olympic gold remains one of Nigeria’s most enduring sporting achievements. For Amokachi, Babayaro, and Lawal, the recognition from Kaduna State means that, after 30 years, at least one of the promises made following their historic triumph has finally been fulfilled.
