JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng — More than 1,600 individuals have been arrested across Gauteng province during the latest phase of Operation Shanela, a targeted anti-crime initiative led by Acting Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana. The intensive 24-hour blitz focused on disrupting criminal networks and deploying officers directly into Johannesburg’s most challenging policing precincts.
According to official reports, a total of 1,626 people were taken into custody over the past 24 hours. A significant portion of these arrests was linked to domestic violence, accounting for 176 incidents involving 175 women and one child. The operation also yielded arrests for a range of serious offenses, including five kidnappings (two in the Johannesburg district and three in the Tshwane district), four carjackings, seven business robberies, five house robberies, 18 attempted murders, six murders, and 16 rapes.
Major General Kekana highlighted that the Jeppe and Cleveland policing precincts remain persistent challenges for violent crimes, including murder, attempted murder, and various forms of robbery. He explained that the South African Police Service (SAPS) periodically analyzes provincial crime data to identify these vulnerable stations. Once identified, SAPS floods these areas with additional resources and support to minimize criminal opportunities and eliminate illicit activity from the community.
Beyond violent crime, the operation featured a strict crackdown on non-compliant liquor outlets. During the blitz, officers raided a local club and ordered all patrons to vacate the premises. Authorities emphasized that while legitimate business operations are supported, strict adherence to the law is mandatory. Violations observed during the raids included establishments operating without an appointed manager or owner present—a direct contravention of the Liquor Act—as well as outlets illegally selling alcohol to underage children and students who should be attending school.
Major General Kekana reaffirmed the SAPS’s unwavering commitment to tackling crime in the province. Law enforcement officials confirmed that Operation Shanela deployments will continue as part of ongoing, proactive efforts to disrupt criminal activity and maintain a highly visible police presence in Gauteng’s identified crime hotspots.
