Moshi Rural gets 41.9bn/- development funds

MOSHI: MOSHI Rural District received 41.976bn/- for development activities between January and June this year, with the funds supporting priority projects in infrastructure, education, health, water and economic activities.

Moshi District Commissioner, Mr Godfrey Mnzava, said the funds had been used to implement development projects, purposely for improving the lives of residents across the district.

He was speaking recently while presenting a report on the implementation of development activities during the Moshi Rural District Executive Committee meeting of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).

“The allocated funds have become the bedrock of development advancement in Moshi District, transforming critical sectors like infrastructure, education, health, water and economic diversification in general,” he said.

Mr Mnzava said the Moshi District Council has continued to manage the allocated funds and ensure they were directed towards improving public services.

During the meeting, Moshi Rural Member of Parliament (MP), Moris Makoi asked for an addition fund of revenue generated from Mount Kilimanjaro allocated for development activities in the district.

MP Makoi said the current allocation was insufficient to address the development needs of communities surrounding the mountain.

“According to available information, the amount being allocated is only a fraction of the total money accrued, the amount is less than one per cent of that revenue which exceeds 900bn/-; my proposal is that at least 10 or 15 per cent of that revenue be set aside, because there are many development activities which need to be undertaken in Moshi Rural District,” he said.

He said more revenue from Mount Kilimanjaro should be channelled towards development activities in more than 40 villages surrounding the mountain, stretching from Hai to areas bordering Rombo District.

Mr Makoi said the villages were facing challenges including dilapidated infrastructure in education, health and water services, which could be addressed by increasing the share of Mount Kilimanjaro revenue allocated for local development.

He said the proposed increase could facilitate the renovation of dilapidated schools, construction of latrines and rehabilitation of rural roads.

According to Mr Makoi, Moshi Rural District has 231 schools and more than 60 face challenges related to dilapidated infrastructure.

He said some of the schools were constructed more than 100 years ago, making rehabilitation necessary to improve the learning environment for pupils.

For his part, Vunjo MP Enock Koola urged ward leaders and councillors to work closely with the council’s management team in implementing development activities.

MP Koola said unity and teamwork among leaders were essential to achieving the goal of improving services and addressing the needs of residents.
