KARIBA, Aug. 26 (NewsDay Live) — A GROUP of Zimbabwean nurses based in the diaspora has joined hands with local women in business to provide relief to families affected by the Mbuyanehanda ferry tragedy in Kariba.
Working with Kariba Women in Business, the nurses mobilised resources to donate hampers to seven families directly affected by the disaster. The initiative was complemented by 17 additional hampers donated by Kariba Women in Business, led by Eliwe Charuma.
The donations were distributed with the support of the Kariba District Social Welfare Office to ensure they reached the most affected households.
Speaking during the handover, group coordinator Nancy Tadyanehondo said the initiative was driven by a desire to stand with grieving families during a difficult period.
“As nurses, we may be far from home, but our hearts are with the people of Kariba,” Tadyanehondo said. “This is our small way of showing solidarity and providing some relief to families who have lost so much. We hope these hampers bring comfort and remind them that they are not alone.”
Charuma said Kariba Women in Business felt it was important to respond quickly to the needs of affected families.
“We know no donation can replace a loved one, but we wanted to do something tangible. Together with our sisters in the diaspora, we have been able to reach 24 families in total,” she said.
One of the beneficiaries, a mother who lost a child in the tragedy, thanked the donors for their support.
“This will go a long way in cushioning us during this painful period,” she said. “We appreciate that people have remembered us.”
The support complements ongoing government and stakeholder efforts to assist bereaved families as the Kariba community continues to recover from the tragedy.
