Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya continued his remarkable start to the season as AmaZulu claimed a 2-1 victory over Richards Bay at the Princess Magogo Stadium in the KZN derby on Friday night.
Ngwenya found the back of the net in the 52nd minute to extend his scoring streak to six consecutive matches from the start of the campaign.
The AmaZulu forward had already made history after scoring in each of his team’s first five matches across all competitions, becoming the first player in PSL history to achieve the feat.
His latest goal against the Natal Rich Boyz means Ngwenya has now extended that record to six consecutive games.
The goal also continued his impressive run in front of goal and took his tally in all competitions to eight already, having established himself as one of the standout performers in AmaZulu’s strong start to the season.
AmaZulu’s victory was not straightforward, however, as Richards Bay fought their way back into the contest after falling behind.
Moses Mthembu equalised from the penalty spot in the 80th minute, but AmaZulu responded almost immediately when Nkosikhona Radebe restored their lead just two minutes later.
That proved to be the decisive moment as AmaZulu held on to claim the derby spoils and another important three points.
Usuthu head coach Arthur Zwane continues to demand more of his sharpshooter despite his remarkable form.
“I don’t want to put him under pressure so we’ll take it game by game but I want him to score every game because he’s a striker. Ngwenya has the potential to score 20 goals a season, I just hope he stays fit this season, because if we keep creating chances for him, he’ll put them away,” he said at the post match presser.
For Ngwenya, the night provided another piece of history.
Having already become the first player to score in each of his team’s opening five matches of a season across all competitions, he has now raised the bar himself.
