Joshua Zirkzee receives international lifeline with emergency Netherlands call-up after injury

Joshua Zirkzee has been named in the Netherlands international squad as a late injury replacement.

Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee has been handed a shock call-up into the Netherlands international squad.

Brian Brobbey suffered a hamstring injury in the Netherlands 1-1 draw against Germany in their UEFA Nations League clash on September 24. He has subsequently withdrawn from the squad.

Zirkzee has been handed a call-up after initially failing to make the cut under new international boss Xavi. He had also missed out on the 2026 World Cup squad.

Netherlands face Serbia twice and Greece in their remaining international fixtures this break.

Zirkzee last played for Netherlands in November 2024 against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Zirkzee prospects improve

We had noted just yesterday how Joshua Zirkzee faced a bleak international break.

No matter how much he impressed behind the scenes, there was almost a zero chance he would be selected to start Manchester United’s first game back.

Zirkzee has struggled to impress at club level for Manchester United this season. He is yet to start a single game, and has not scored during his 98 minutes from the bench.

He will only be arriving in the Dutch squad as a back-up, but this call-up will be great for his confidence and can only help his transfer value.

It also gives him something productive to do during the break.
