ONGWEDIVA – A 25-year-old Angolan national was arrested after allegedly giving birth to a baby boy and throwing him into an old pit latrine at Iihanguti village in the Elim constituency on Tuesday.
Omusati police commander Commissioner Ismael Basson said that the incident was reported at about 09h30 after the woman’s housemates became suspicious when they noticed that she was no longer pregnant.“Through investigation and interrogation, the suspect took the police to the pit latrine, where the body was removed,” Basson said.
He said the suspect allegedly wrapped the newborn’s body in a blanket before throwing it into the old pit latrine.
The woman was subsequently transported to the Oshikuku Mission Hospital, where she was admitted under police guard.
Basson further said that an opened case of concealment of birth and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of the newborn are continuing. In a separate incident, police in the Omusati region arrested a 34-year-old man, who allegedly raped a five-year-old boy at Ohambalanganga village in the Outapi constituency.
The incident occurred during the day on an unknown date in 2026 when the suspect, who is reportedly the victim’s uncle, was left alone in the house with the child.
The suspect allegedly chased the minor and dragged him into his sleeping room, where he sexually assaulted the minor.
The minor’s 60-year-old guardian reported the matter to the police. Basson said the suspect has been arrested and is expected to face a charge under the Combating of Rape Act.
