Tinubu Approves Akwa Ibom Deep Seaport Project

According to a report by The Punch Nigeria on Friday, November 6, 2026, President Bola Tinubu has approved the long-awaited Ibom Deep Seaport project in Akwa Ibom State.

The president announced the approval while addressing residents during a reception and rally at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The development has generated excitement across the state, where residents have waited for progress on the proposed seaport project.

The Ibom Deep Seaport is expected to strengthen Akwa Ibom’s position as a major commercial hub in the South-South region.

It could also improve maritime activity, support trade and attract fresh investment to the state.

The project is expected to create jobs and expand economic opportunities for residents.

It could also benefit businesses involved in shipping, logistics, manufacturing, agriculture and other related sectors.

During the event, Tinubu also approved the upgrade of Victor Attah International Airport to international airport status.

The decision is expected to improve air connectivity and support the state’s growing economic ambitions.

Governor Umo Eno had appealed to the president to approve the seaport project, describing it as an important development capable of unlocking the economy of Akwa Ibom, the South-South region and Nigeria as a whole.

The president’s approval represents a major step forward for the project, although its successful completion will depend on funding, planning and effective implementation.

For Akwa Ibom residents, the announcement offers renewed hope that the long-discussed seaport will move from the planning stage to actual construction and operation.

If completed, the facility could transform the state’s economy and strengthen its role in Nigeria’s maritime industry.
