The EcoCash SuperApp has crossed the 500K+ download milestone on Google Play, with a 4.3 rating from roughly 2,700 reviewers.
That is impressive early traction, especially for a new Zimbabwean app.
EcoCash has supported the push with a referral programme that rewards both the referrer and the referred user. It is also migrating customers from the old EcoCash app to the new platform.
Those moves suggest that the SuperApp is strategically important to the company. But downloads alone do not tell us whether the bet is paying off.
Many people may have downloaded it simply to continue making EcoCash transactions.
The real test, and what EcoCash is likely weatching, is whether they are using the features that actually make it a SuperApp; the Chat, the Explore social feed.
Both features have really strong existing competition in Zimbabwe from Meta. Chat is dominated by WhatsApp and the social feeds are dominated by Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and increasingly WhatsApp Channels. Competing for attention with these platforms will be super hard.
EcoCash can spend to incentivise installation, but can it build a new daily habit? Are Chat and Explore useful enough to justify the investment?
