Tems’ ‘What You Need’ Hits 30 Weeks on Billboard Hot 100

Some songs arrive loudly. They dominate the moment, fill playlists, take over radio and seem impossible to escape. Others take a quieter route. They linger, find their audience slowly and, long after the first excitement has passed, continue to show up. There is something different about a song that refuses to leave. For Tems, that persistence has become part of the story.

The Week That Changed the Record Book

Tems

On October 21, 2026, another week on the Billboard Hot 100 turned into a major career milestone for Tems.

Her song “What You Need” reached its 30th week on the chart, making it the longest-charting solo song by an African artist in Billboard Hot 100 history. It moved past the previous mark of 29 weeks, held by South African star Tyla’s “Water” and Nigerian singer CKay’s “Love Nwantiti.”

At the time of the milestone, “What You Need” was sitting at No. 33 on the Hot 100, having previously reached No. 29, its highest position on the chart. The number 30 may look simple on paper. Getting there was anything but.

The Long Road of “What You Need”

“What You Need” did not begin its Billboard journey as an obvious chart monster. The song was part of Love Is a Kingdom, the seven-track EP Tems released without prior warning on November 21, 2025. The project arrived through RCA Records and Since ’93 and marked her first solo project after her 2024 debut album, Born in the Wild.

“What You Need” was one of the songs that stood out from the project, but its journey on the Hot 100 developed gradually.

It entered the chart at No. 93 in February 2026. A few weeks later, RCA and Since ’93 released it again as a standalone single. Rather than racing straight to the top, the song built its presence over time and it eventually reached No. 29.

More importantly, it stayed relevant. Its 30 weeks on the Hot 100 have been spread across 37 chart weeks, meaning the song has had to find its way back after falling off the chart. That makes the achievement less about one huge peak and more about endurance. And that endurance has been closely connected to radio.

Why “What You Need” Refused to Fade

Tems

The song’s strongest story has not necessarily been its position on the all-genre Hot 100. It has been its steady growth across American radio.

In July 2026, “What You Need” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, giving Tems her fourth No. 1 on the chart. The song had moved from No. 2 to the top after becoming the most-played song on the chart’s reporting mainstream R&B and hip-hop radio stations during the June 19–25 tracking period.

Then came another important milestone. In August, “What You Need” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart. It became Tems’ third No. 1 on that chart, following “Free Mind” and her collaboration with Wizkid, “Essence.”

By October, the song had also reached No. 1 on Rhythmic Airplay, marking Tems’ first No. 1 on that chart as a lead artist.

That progression helps explain why the song has remained on the Hot 100 for so long. It was not simply carried by the attention surrounding its release. It kept finding listeners in different parts of the American radio landscape.

A Song Written Years Before the Record

There is an even more unexpected part of the story. Tems did not write “What You Need” with the Billboard record in mind. She recently revealed that she wrote the song seven years ago while going through a breakup. The song sat with her for years before eventually becoming part of Love Is a Kingdom.

For Tems, songwriting has often been tied to processing emotion. In her recent interview with EE72, she explained her relationship with writing music: “Writing music helps me release pain and it helps me to heal.” She added that once she finishes a song, “everything I felt” is gone and she can “forgive” and “move on.”

That makes “What You Need” an interesting piece of her catalogue. A song born from a difficult personal moment eventually found a life far beyond the circumstances that inspired it. And the song’s message remains rooted in that emotional clarity. In the track, Tems confronts a relationship that no longer works, arriving at the difficult recognition that she cannot be what another person needs.

When the song’s official video arrived in June 2026, it visualised that conflict through images of Tems pulling against a brick wall, smashing plates and struggling with the weight of the relationship before the video gradually shifts from black and white into colour.

Tems also acknowledged the personal connection listeners had formed with the song, writing after its release: “To know that there’s people out there that relate to this song and what I’ve experienced, honestly warms my heart!!”
That connection may be part of what has allowed the song to travel so far.

Before “What You Need,” Tems Had Already Made Billboard History

Tems

The new record does not exist in isolation. Tems’ Billboard story began to change dramatically with her collaborations.

“Essence,” her 2021 collaboration with Wizkid, helped establish her as a major presence in the United States. “Wait for U,” Future’s 2022 single featuring Drake and Tems, went all the way to No. 1 on the Hot 100 and spent 41 weeks on the chart.

She later added more major appearances, including collaborations with artists such as Drake, Future and Dave.

But there was always an important distinction between those records and “What You Need.” They showed what Tems could do alongside some of the world’s biggest artists.

“What You Need” is showing what happens when the spotlight is entirely hers. Before it, her longest-charting solo Hot 100 song was “Free Mind,” which spent 21 weeks on the chart. “What You Need” passed that mark during its 23rd week and has now stretched the gap considerably. That is what makes this particular record significant to her career.

From CKay to Tyla to Tems

There is also a larger African story behind the number. CKay’s “Love Nwantiti” reached 29 weeks on the Hot 100. Tyla’s “Water” matched that figure, while also becoming one of the biggest African crossover hits of its era, peaking at No. 7. Now Tems has moved beyond both songs with “What You Need.”

The progression is worth noticing. An African song does not simply have to enter the American chart anymore. The bigger question is how long it can stay there. That shift matters because the Hot 100 measures more than a song’s first burst of popularity. A long run requires continued activity across streaming, sales and radio. In “What You Need’s” case, radio has become particularly important to its longevity.

The record therefore tells two stories at once: one about Tems’ individual career and another about the increasing ability of African artists to sustain attention in the American mainstream.

30 Weeks, But the Story Isn’t Over

Tems

A chart record usually invites a question about the number that comes next. For Tems, that question is already part of the appeal.

“What You Need” has shown that it does not need a huge debut or a No. 1 Hot 100 peak to become historically important. Its strength has been its ability to remain present.

Seven years after Tems wrote a song during a breakup, it has become the longest-charting solo African song in Billboard Hot 100 history.

Thirty weeks later, it is still there. And for now, it is still counting.
