NSCDC detains 24 personnel over Niger mining deaths

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has detained three additional personnel over the deaths of suspected illegal miners in Niger State, bringing the total number in custody to 24.

NSCDC spokesperson Babawale Afolabi said the affected officers from the Niger State Command were suspended and transferred to the corps’ national headquarters in Abuja for questioning and disciplinary proceedings.

The latest action follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive for a transparent investigation into the incident. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo subsequently announced a 10-member independent committee to investigate the deaths. The NSCDC has also ordered its flag to fly at half-mast across its formations for three days.

NiMet warns of thunderstorms and rain across Nigeria

Several parts of Nigeria should expect thunderstorms and rainfall from Monday to Wednesday, according to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency. NiMet also warned that strong winds could occur before some storms.

On Monday morning, light rain and thunderstorms are expected in parts of Taraba and Kebbi. Later, moderate rainfall could affect the North-East, Kaduna, Taraba, Kebbi and parts of the North-Central region.

Southern states are also expected to experience cloudy conditions, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain forecast for Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River. More thunderstorms and light rain are expected across the region by afternoon or evening.

Cindy Crawford’s son Presley Gerber dies at 27

Presley Gerber, the model and son of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber, has died aged 27, according to a family spokesperson. He died on Sunday at a rehabilitation facility, with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office yet to disclose a cause of death.

The family has asked for privacy as they mourn. Presley followed his mother into modelling, while his younger sister, Kaia Gerber, also works as a model and actor.

In 2018, Presley and Crawford recreated her famous 1992 Pepsi advert for the Super Bowl. Crawford later recalled being a proud mother watching her son work.

Phyna and Nkechi Blessing take social media feud to ring on October 1

Phyna and Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing are set to settle their recent social media clash in the boxing ring on October 1 in Lagos.

The celebrity bout, tagged “Phyna vs Nkechi”, will take place at Federal Palace Hotel as part of Balmoral Group Promotions’ “Chaos in the Ring” series. Their matchup follows a public exchange after Nkechi criticised Phyna’s online disputes.

The event will also feature professional boxing and celebrity entertainment, with previous participants including Portable and Carter Efe. Organisers said the October 1 event will be broadcast live on DAZN and SuperSport, extending its reach beyond the venue.

Resident Evil reboot breaks franchise box office records

Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ reboot has delivered a huge opening weekend, earning about $60 million domestically and $108 million worldwide.
