The NNPC Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL)/Seplat Energy Joint Venture (JV) has strengthened its investment in education in Delta State with the commissioning of two fully equipped Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) laboratories in Asagba Mixed Secondary School and Zappa Basic Secondary School, Asaba, Delta state.
The Joint Venture also trained an additional 500 teachers across Delta State in contemporary STEAM-based teaching skills as part of efforts to improve the quality of education and prepare students for the demands of a changing world.
At the commissioning and handover ceremony in Asaba on Sunday, Chioma Afe, Director of External Affairs & Social Performance, Seplat Energy Plc, represented by Esther Icha, General Manager, Corporate Social Investment & Social Performance, said the interventions reflected the JV’s strategic investment in the future generation through quality education.
Afe said the laboratories were designed to promote creative, practical and student-centred learning, stressing that students would have opportunities to apply knowledge rather than depend solely on theoretical lessons.
“Through these laboratories, our students will not only learn theories, they will experiment, design, create, test-ideas and build real confidence to solve real life problems,” she said.
Representing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibuogwu, commended Seplat Energy for its sustained investment in education and other sectors across the state.
Ashibuogwu urged the students to make judicious use of the facilities and approach the future with confidence, encouraging them not to fear failure because, as he noted, “many great inventors failed many times before they succeeded”.
Also speaking, Hon. Bridget Anyafulu, Member Representing Oshimili South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, commended Seplat Energy for donating laboratories to schools in Oshimili South.
Meanwhile, the Principal of Adagba Secondary School, Asaba, Stella Ajufo, expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government and Seplat Energy for selecting the school as a beneficiary.
She assured that the laboratory would be put to effective use, revealing that seven teachers from the school had participated in the JV’s STEP workshop and received training on the use of the laboratory equipment.
The trained teachers, she explained, would transfer their knowledge to other teachers in the school to promote wider utilisation of the facility.
Ajufo also assured that the school would protect and maintain the equipment while ensuring that students derive maximum benefit from the new learning environment.
Earlier, at the STEM Onboarding ceremony for 500 teachers, Afe, represented by Emmanuel Otokhine, Senior Manager, Brands, Sponsorship and PR, Seplat Energy Plc, reaffirmed the JV’s commitment to continuous investment in quality education.
She described teachers as central to the success of any education system, saying investment in educators was essential to changing the trajectory of students.
The 2026 interventions underline the NEPL/Seplat JV’s continued investment in education through teacher development and practical learning infrastructure, with the goal of strengthening educator capacity, improving learning outcomes and equipping students with the skills required to become innovators, problem-solvers and future leaders.
