England Rugby World Cup Hero Phil Vickery Unveils Ripped Physique Amid CTE Diagnosis

Former England rugby international Phil Vickery has stunned fans with a dramatic physical transformation after stepping onto the bodybuilding stage at the age of 50.

The former prop, who helped England win the 2003 Rugby World Cup under Sir Clive Woodward, recently competed in a bodybuilding event in Hull, showcasing a muscular physique that looks markedly different from his playing days.

Vickery featured in all seven matches of England’s triumphant World Cup campaign, establishing himself as an important member of the team that secured the country’s first men’s Rugby World Cup title.

Phil Vickery Explains His Decision to Take Up Bodybuilding

Vickery shared photographs from the competition on Instagram after allowing himself more than a week to recover from the event organised by the Physical Culture Association.

Alongside the images, he explained that bodybuilding had become about far more than physical appearance or the prospect of winning a competition.

The former England captain said weightlifting had helped him physically, but its benefits for his mental health had been particularly valuable.

He also highlighted the discipline, demanding preparation and sense of community that came with competing.

Addressing questions about his motivation, Vickery explained that the challenge appealed to him because success on stage depended on personal effort rather than being able to rely on teammates.

He wrote that his physique reflected the work he had put in, adding that his goal was to become the best version of himself and improve on his previous performance.

Former England Teammate Matt Dawson Reacts to Transformation

Vickery also expressed his gratitude to bodybuilding coach Dave Campbell, describing him as both a friend and a mentor who supported him throughout the preparation process.

Campbell responded to the post by praising Vickery’s progress, acknowledging the injuries and setbacks they had worked through before the competition.

He congratulated his client on the result, saying he had done exceptionally well despite the challenges encountered along the way.

Former England teammate Matt Dawson was equally impressed by the photographs, reacting with surprise at Vickery’s muscular appearance and praising the effort required to reach that level of conditioning.

England’s official social media account also joined the conversation with a playful message asking Vickery whether he fancied playing another game.

From England’s 2003 World Cup Triumph to Retirement

Vickery remains associated with one of the most memorable periods in English rugby history, having played throughout the team’s successful 2003 World Cup campaign.

However, his professional career came to an end in 2010 when injuries forced him to retire.

Since leaving the sport, the former prop has pursued several different interests, including coaching, media work and campaigning for improved player welfare.

His transition into bodybuilding represents another chapter in his life beyond professional rugby.

Vickery Opens Up About Memory Problems and Brain Disease Diagnosis

The transformation comes against the backdrop of Vickery’s disclosures about his health following years of playing professional rugby.

In August, he revealed that he had been experiencing memory problems after receiving a diagnosis of probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease associated with repeated head impacts.

Speaking to The Observer, Vickery reflected on his complicated relationship with the sport that defined much of his career.

He made clear that, despite the difficulties he has experienced, he would still choose to play rugby again if given the opportunity.

Vickery also acknowledged concerns about other former players who may be experiencing health problems linked to their time in the game.

Rather than focusing on assigning blame, he called for greater support for those affected, stressing the importance of helping people who are struggling with the consequences of their experiences in rugby.
