Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma says South Africa has no shortage of men

March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma says South Africa has no shortage of men, as she questions why the government allows foreign men into the country under the pretext of seeking refugee status. Her remarks form part of her wider campaign against immigration, in which she has repeatedly called on the government to put South Africans first. The statement has added to the ongoing debate about foreign nationals in South Africa.

What the post does not settle is what she was responding to when she made the remark, since the post does not set out the context of her statement or when she said it. The post also does not say whether she has elaborated on the claim or whether the government has responded. Those details matter because they would establish the basis of her comment. Without them, the account rests on her statement, and the question of why foreign men are admitted under refugee status remains her own political argument.

Some viewers supported her remarks, saying she was right to question the government’s immigration policy and others saying the country should prioritise its own citizens. Others criticised her, saying the comment was hostile to foreign nationals and that refugee status should not be conflated with immigration.

What has not been settled is whether the government has responded to her remarks or whether she has clarified what she meant. The post does not establish whether her statement was part of a wider speech or a single comment. The public is waiting for more information, because the debate over immigration and refugee policy has continued without any official response.
