GoldBod targets bigger stake for Ghana in new mines through geological studies

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is undertaking geological investigations in parts of the country to reduce investment risks and position Ghana to secure stronger equity stakes in future mining projects, Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi has announced.

Mr Gyamfi said the board was collaborating with the Ghana Geological Survey Authority under its Mining Support Programme to investigate mineralised areas at Funsi in the Upper West Region and Bensere in the Ashanti Region.

The studies are expected to provide reliable geological data, attract credible investors and support the responsible expansion of Ghana’s mining base.

Delivering a keynote address at the African Minerals Policy Forum – Mining in Motion 2026, Mr Gyamfi said the initiative was intended to address one of the major barriers to greater Ghanaian participation in the mining industry: the risk capital required for geological exploration.

He argued that mineral sovereignty must extend beyond legal ownership of resources to effective local participation in financing, technology, processing and mining operations.

“These studies will help build a reliable investment-grade asset portfolio, reduce investor risks and position GoldBod to negotiate stronger equity stakes in the resulting model mines for Ghana,” he said.

Mr Gyamfi added that the country needed to move away from overdependence on free-carried interests and royalties towards securing controlling equity interests in sustainable mines.
