Matlala briefly appeared alone, facing fraud, forgery, “artery” and contravention of the Identification Act charges.
NPA regional spokeswoman Lumka Mahanjana said: “Matlala abandoned his bail.”
She further said Matlala faced two counts of fraud, two counts of “artery”, forgery and contravention of the Identification Act.
Apparently, he abandoned his bail application, and the matter was postponed to 29 October, when he’ll join his three other co-accused. The matter was postponed for further investigations.
However, she said the state had intended to oppose his bail application.
“The state alleged that Matlala and his co-accused misrepresented themselves in order to secure a lease agreement,” she said.
“In this case, there’s prima facie evidence against the accused. That’s why the state enrolled the matter and why the accused are appearing before the court.”
She said the accused had paid for the lease and occupied the residence for one year, although they had signed a two-year contract.
They then cancelled the lease around April 2026. The property is in a residential area.
Co-accused Masethe, Makofane and Tsakane Matlala were previously granted R20 000 bail each on Wednesday, 23 September 2026.
The state didn’t oppose bail for the three co-accused.
