A 24-year-old Midlands State University (MSU) Computer Science Student has appeared in court after he alleged stole USD1.1 million from CABS.
Sabelo Malunga appeared before Harare magistrate’s court facing charges of hacking.
The State alleges that Malunga used access he had as an IT intern at CABS from November last year to February this year to carry out the cyberattack.
He apparently used fraudulent VISA and ZIPIT transactions.
The issue came to light when CABS began detecting suspicious transactions involving its debit cards.
While they noticed it and attempted to block, USD210,500 had gone. It as never recovered.
Reconciliations then found 1 911 fraudulent ZIPIT transactions worth US$925 679.
The total prejudice amounts to US$1,136,179. None of it has been recoverd.
CABS then engaged South African digital forensic firm MWR to deal with the issue.
The report linked Malunga to the attack.
What then was revolved is that Malunga had installed a remote-access tool called SUPREMO, without permission.
