You can move on, but first move out: The distressing lesson from the Dzivarasekwa tragedy

There is something almost unbearably tragic about the ordinary details surrounding the Dzivarasekwa deaths. A husband and wife went to bed in what should have been the privacy of their home.

By the time the night was over, both were dead. Dr Martin Muduva, a Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission commissioner and Midlands State University lecturer, had suffered fatal injuries in an alleged axe attack.

His wife, Lyliosa Chirara, subsequently died after allegedly ingesting poison. Police investigations remain under way.

But the horror did not begin with an axe. According to media reports, Muduva had allegedly been involved in a relationship with Patience Mangwiro, identified as Midlands State University’s acting Director of Enterprise, for about five years.

The pair reportedly had a child together. At the weekend, reports say, Muduva paid lobola for Mangwiro.

Then came the photograph. Muduva reportedly posted an image from the roora day on his WhatsApp status before deleting it. By then, however, it had allegedly been seen. Photographs from the ceremony were also reportedly circulating on social media.

We should be careful about attributing motives to either party. There is no established evidence that anybody deliberately set out to spite or humiliate Chirara.

A person may post photographs because they are celebrating love, family or a significant cultural occasion. Yet the same photographs can be experienced very differently by somebody on the other side of a broken marriage.

And then came the catastrophe. Reports allege that Muduva was attacked by Chirara three times with an axe while asleep. Chirara subsequently died after ingesting rat poison.

The question that should haunt us is not simply what happened in that bedroom. It is how a private relationship became a public catastrophe.

WhatsApp, Zimbabwe’s New Village Noticeboard

There was a time when news travelled differently. A relationship was announced by relatives, a marriage became known through neighbours and church communities, and gossip travelled through family gatherings, beerhalls and the old-fashioned grapevine.

Zimbabweans have never needed Wi-Fi to know somebody else’s business, but social media has transformed the speed, scale and permanence of that knowledge.

WhatsApp has become our modern village noticeboard, wedding invitation, family album and gossip network rolled into one. A photograph posted at 10pm can be seen by hundreds before midnight. Delete it five minutes later and the internet has already done what the internet does.

Somebody has saved it, somebody has forwarded it and somebody has discussed it. The photograph may disappear from the original status, but not necessarily from the social world into which it has already been released.

That has introduced something psychologically different into relationships: the permanence of humiliation. A private betrayal can now become a public spectacle with extraordinary speed.

Intention matters, but impact can be very different from intention. Someone may see a photograph as an innocent celebration of love, while the person on the other side of a fractured marriage may experience the same image as a declaration that somebody else has taken their place.

We should not pretend to know what Chirara felt or what Muduva intended. We should, however, be mature enough to recognise that the two things are not necessarily the same.

When The Lover Becomes The Bride

This is where lobola becomes important. Lobola is not merely a payment or financial transaction. It carries profound cultural meaning and can represent the recognition of a relationship and the involvement of families. That makes the reported roora day particularly significant.

Consider the emotional transformation involved, without pretending to know what happened inside the minds of the people concerned. For years, there was allegedly another relationship.

There was reportedly a child. Then, suddenly, there was roora day. A relationship that had existed alongside an existing marriage was apparently moving into the language and symbolism of marriage itself.

What happens emotionally when the person who was once the secret lover appears to become the publicly recognised bride?

We cannot answer that question on Chirara’s behalf, and we should not attempt to diagnose her state of mind from the outside.

But anybody who has experienced betrayal understands that there can be a profound difference between suspecting that somebody has replaced you and watching that replacement acquire the public symbolism of permanence.

The photographs matter for precisely that reason. Not because photographs cause violence, because they do not, but because photographs can turn something ambiguous into something painfully concrete.

When Does A Marriage Actually End?

This may be the most uncomfortable question of all. When does a marriage actually end? Is it when two people stop loving each other, when intimacy disappears, when one spouse begins another relationship, when they separate physically, when both agree that it is over, or when divorce papers are signed?

The circumstances surrounding Muduva and Chirara raise these questions without providing easy answers. People are asking why Muduva was apparently still living with his first wife if another relationship had reached the point of lobola.

Had the first marriage ended emotionally but not practically? Had it ended for one person but not the other?

Was there an understanding between the spouses about the future? Was polygamy contemplated? Or was one relationship simply continuing while another was being constructed alongside it?

These are questions, not conclusions. We do not know the private agreements between two people who are now dead, and we should not invent answers merely to satisfy public curiosity.

Yet they are questions worth asking because thousands of relationships exist in precisely this grey territory, where a marriage may be legally intact, physically occupied and socially visible even though one or both partners may have emotionally departed from it.

Moving On Is Not The Same As Moving Over

There is a distinction we desperately need to learn. Moving on means accepting that one relationship has ended, dealing honestly with its consequences and then building another life.

Moving over means carrying an unresolved relationship into the next one and expecting everybody else to adjust.

People have every right to fall out of love. They have the right to leave marriages, to fall in love again, to remarry and to seek happiness elsewhere. But freedom does not abolish responsibility.

If a marriage is over, there should be courage to acknowledge that reality. If separation is necessary, separate. If divorce is necessary, pursue it. If reconciliation remains possible, work towards it.

What is deeply problematic is publicly constructing a new romantic life while leaving the person from the previous relationship suspended in ambiguity.

Before posting the photographs, before publicly celebrating the new partner, before turning private romance into social media content, perhaps we should ask ourselves whether we have actually ended the old relationship.

Have I dealt honestly with the person I married? Have the practical arrangements been resolved? Does the other person understand where the relationship stands?

Am I genuinely moving forward, or am I simply moving someone else into a space another person still occupies?

And What About Polygamy?

This is where cultural sensitivity becomes essential. We should not casually invoke “African culture” as though it provides a universal permission slip for every complicated romantic arrangement.

If Muduva intended a polygamous arrangement, we cannot know from the available reports whether that was his intention, whether it was discussed with Chirara, or whether she consented to it.

Those questions should not be answered by journalists, Facebook commentators or armchair cultural experts.

The ethical principle, however, is straightforward. If somebody genuinely wants a polygamous marriage, there should be honesty, transparency and meaningful participation by those whose lives will be directly affected. Culture cannot become a convenient word invoked when it benefits one person while everybody else is expected to silently absorb the consequences.

If a person wants to leave one marriage for another, that person should have the courage to bring the first relationship to an honest conclusion.

If the intention is genuinely to maintain both relationships, then there should be the courage to confront that reality openly with everyone affected.

Whatever one’s cultural position on polygamy, secrecy and ambiguity are hardly foundations for a healthy family arrangement.

Public Hobnobbing And The New Etiquette Of Relationships

Zimbabwe has not yet fully worked out the etiquette of romance in the social media age. There is a difference between privately developing feelings for somebody and publicly displaying a new romantic relationship while an existing marriage remains visibly intact.

People have a right to happiness, but rights come with responsibilities. Before posting romantic photographs, celebrating a new partner publicly or broadcasting a roora day to the world, people should ask whether they have properly dealt with the relationship that preceded it.

This is not an argument against second marriages, remarriage or falling in love again. It is an argument for closure before celebration.

There is nothing inherently wrong with falling in love again. The problem begins when the new relationship is publicly celebrated before the old one has been honestly buried.

A person cannot control every reaction to their happiness, but they can exercise judgement about how, when and in what circumstances that happiness is publicly displayed.

The Psychology Of Public Humiliation

Betrayal can be devastating enough in private. Public exposure can add another dimension. Discovering that a spouse has been unfaithful is one thing. Discovering that the relationship allegedly lasted years is another.

Discovering that there is a child from the relationship adds another layer. Discovering that lobola has been paid for the other woman changes the meaning again.

Then seeing photographs from the ceremony, followed by their circulation on social media, can make what was once private devastatingly visible.

We must not claim that these developments necessarily produced a particular psychological reaction in Chirara. We simply do not know. But we can understand why public exposure can intensify feelings of betrayal, displacement, embarrassment and loss of dignity.

None of this excuses violence. An axe does not become less horrific because a marriage was troubled. Adultery does not make a person responsible for being murdered.

Mangwiro should not be blamed for violence allegedly perpetrated against Muduva, and Chirara should not be reduced to a cartoon villain when the circumstances involve a deeply complicated human tragedy.

Understanding the emotional environment surrounding a tragedy is not the same thing as justifying the crime.

Zimbabwe’s Dangerous Collision Of Old And New

Zimbabwe is caught between competing relationship systems. There are traditional expectations around marriage, fidelity, family honour, masculinity and social responsibility.

There are modern expectations around individual happiness, romantic autonomy and personal choice. Sitting on top of both is social media, where every relationship can become a public performance.

The result can be combustible. A generation ago, somebody could experience a relationship crisis largely within the confines of family and community.

Today, a spouse may discover an affair through a WhatsApp photograph before breakfast. A relationship that took five years to develop can become publicly visible in five seconds.

We have entered an era in which the difference between private pain and public humiliation can be one screenshot.

Zimbabwe needs a more mature conversation about what happens when traditional expectations collide with modern relationships and the instantaneous publicity created by social media.

The Hypocrisy Of Public Morality

There is also something uncomfortable about our fascination with the “other woman”. Zimbabwean society can condemn adultery in public while privately consuming the drama surrounding extra-marital relationships with almost voyeuristic enthusiasm.

We love simple villains: the cheating husband, the wicked wife, the homewrecker, the innocent spouse, the monster. Real marriages are rarely that neat.

We do not know everything that happened between Muduva and Chirara. We do not know every conversation, every argument, every attempt at reconciliation or every private agreement. And because both are dead, many questions will never receive answers.

That should make us less confident, not more confident, in our judgements.

The tragedy should not become entertainment merely because it contains every ingredient of a modern Zimbabwean social media thriller: a university, a public official, marriage, infidelity, a child, lobola, photographs, an axe, poison and death.

These were real people. Families must now bury them. Children and relatives must live with the consequences. Colleagues must process an extraordinary loss. The internet, meanwhile, will eventually move on to its next scandal.

The Axe Was Not The Beginning

The axe was where the physical violence allegedly began. It may not have been where the emotional story began. The deeper story may involve years of unresolved conflict, competing loyalties, secrecy, marital breakdown, cultural expectations, betrayal and the extraordinary power of public exposure.

We must be careful not to construct a neat causal chain from those elements. Only a proper investigation can establish what actually happened and why. But the broader lesson remains: Zimbabwe needs a more mature culture of ending relationships.

People will fall out of love. Marriages will fail. People will fall in love with new partners. Some will divorce. Some will remarry. Some will choose polygamous relationships. These realities are not disappearing.

What must disappear is the idea that we can move into the next relationship without responsibly dealing with the one behind us.

If a marriage is over, say so. If it can be saved, save it. If it cannot, end it with dignity. If divorce is necessary, pursue it. If polygamy is genuinely intended, discuss it honestly with everyone affected.

And if a new love has arrived, remember that celebrating it publicly while an old relationship remains unresolved can carry consequences nobody intended.

Betrayal does not justify violence. Humiliation does not justify violence. Heartbreak does not justify violence. The answer to betrayal is not an axe. The answer to unbearable emotional pain is not rat poison. The answer to a broken marriage is not revenge.

The tragedy of Dzivarasekwa is not simply that an affair allegedly ended in death.

It is that, in an age where private betrayal can become public humiliation in the space of a WhatsApp status, we still have not learnt how to move on from one relationship before publicly moving into another.
