Federal Govt Begins Payment Of Arrears To Military Pensioners
The Military Pensions Board has announced the commencement of new pension rates and arrears to military pensioners following salary adjustments from new minimum wage.
President Bola Tinubu had in August 2026 approved salary increases of between 30 and 80 per cent for Nigeria’s armed forces personnel.
According to a statement by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, under the new arrangement which became effective from September 1, officers above the rank of colonel will enjoy a 30 per cent salary increase.

This applies to Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals.
Personnel from colonel to warrant officer will have a 50 per cent increase, while private to staff sergeant will have 80 per cent increase.
The earlier approval did not mention whether retirees would enjoy same benefits but following series of protests and engagements, authorities said the adjustments would also cater for the veterans who rely on their pensions for survival.
A statement by the public relations officer of the Military Pensions Board, Squadron Leader Aliyu Mohammed yesterday said the applicable arrears had been processed and would be paid to all pensioners effectively.
“The Military Pensions Board (MPB) is pleased to inform all military pensioners that the implementation of the newly approved pension rates, following the adjustment arising from the new minimum wage has been effected.
The applicable arrears have also been processed and would be paid to all pensioners account effective today (2nd October, 2026),.
The board appreciates the patience, understanding and cooperation demonstrated by military pensioners throughout the implementation process.
“The board remains committed to the timely payment of pensions and the continuous improvement of pension administration in recognition of the invaluable service and sacrifices of Nigeria’s military veterans,” the statement said.
