General Mkhwanazi’s Secret War Exposed—Why Cartels Are Running Scared

General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi remains a prominent figure in South Africa’s ongoing national conversation about police accountability, organized crime, and the fight against powerful criminal syndicates. Supporters emphasize that continuous, well-planned law enforcement operations are vital for breaking down criminal networks, especially as concerns grow over the potential infiltration of state security bodies by elements linked to underground activities.

Those backing Mkhwanazi argue that tackling organized crime demands far more than public appearances or high-profile statements. Instead, they stress that deep intelligence gathering, targeted tactical operations, and the arrest of key syndicate leaders are necessary to disrupt networks involved in drug trafficking, illegal firearms trading, and related serious offences. While recent drug seizures and arrests have been highlighted as evidence of headway, experts and observers note that long-term progress must ultimately be evaluated through verified police statistics, formal court proceedings, and securing final convictions.

The broader discussion also brings attention to operational challenges within KwaZulu-Natal, where provincial police leadership continues to operate under complex administrative conditions. At the same time, public debate has touched on the official response to outbreaks of violence against foreign nationals and the destruction of property in urban centers. Critics have questioned the absence of top law enforcement leaders at specific tension points, such as Kenneth Kaunda Street in Durban, during moments of unrest.

In response, supporters contend that expecting top officials to attend every localized disturbance overlooks how structured police hierarchies work. They maintain that specialized units and local commanders are responsible for managing public order, allowing senior leadership to stay focused on high-level strategy and major criminal networks.

Ultimately, South Africa requires a balanced policing approach that can address immediate public safety threats while simultaneously conducting thorough, intelligence-driven investigations into organized crime. For senior leadership, temporary gains like arrests and seizures mark essential first steps, but enduring stability depends on building solid cases, securing court convictions, and maintaining public trust across all communities.
