The Asoli Progressive Party has urgently called upon the President to intervene in purported escalating chaos, anarchy and theatrics happening at the National Assembly.
In a press statement, the party’s president Josef Kauandenge criticised National Assembly Speaker Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila for allegedly interrupting members of Parliament and failing to allow them to fully articulate their points.
“The Speaker runs a tight ship and does not allow parliamentarians to express themselves fully without interruptions from her chair,” said Kauandenge.
He warned that opposition lawmakers are being silenced, calling for a more cooperative relationship between the
ruling and opposition members of
Parliament.
“The President must intervene and call upon the Speaker and the Swapo parliamentary caucus and order them to change their tactics and move towards a more consultative spirit with the opposition leaders,” Kauandenge said.
The party believes that Parliament can only function properly if Swapo, the Speaker and the opposition parties consult with one another before bills are tabled.
“It is disappointing that over almost two years now, since the new Parliament started, few bills have been passed through the Parliament because of the inability of the Swapo Party and the opposition to put their differences aside,” said Kauandenge.
The National Assembly returned from recess on Tuesday and has descended into chaos, resulting in back-to-back adjournments.
Members of Parliament failed to agree on the proposed appointment of the Electoral Commission of Namibia chairperson, causing the opposition MPs to walk out of Parliament, leaving the House on standstill and the nomination unresolved.
The Independent Patriots for Change’s motion to remove Kuugongelwa-Amadhila as Speaker of the National Assembly has gained support from the other opposition parties.
The motion put the Speaker in a dilemma, as she rejected the motion.
In another incident, Affirmative Repositioning members Job Amupanda, Vaino Hangula and Tuhafeni Kalola were escorted out of the chamber by parliamentary bouncers and security personnel ordered by the Speaker.
The initial confrontation began over Amupanda being scolded for wearing jeans and subsequently using a cell phone in the house.
