Somaliland and Puntland Build Cordial Ties Through Security and Trade Cooperation

Washington (WDN) — Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro has highlighted what he described as a growing and constructive relationship between Somaliland and Puntland, emphasizing dialogue, security cooperation and easier movement of people and goods between the two neighboring administrations.

Speaking during his visit to the United States, President Irro said that strengthening internal peace and maintaining stable relations with neighboring administrations had been among his government’s priorities since taking office.

He singled out Puntland as an important partner, saying the two sides had established practical cooperation in areas of security, counterterrorism and the fight against piracy.

“When I came to office, one of my highest priorities was peace within Somaliland and peace with neighboring administrations. We established relations with Puntland and agreed to cooperate on peace, as well as on combating terrorism and piracy,” Irro said.

Joint Committees Strengthen Dialogue

According to President Irro, Somaliland and Puntland have established joint committees to maintain regular communication and address issues of mutual concern.

The committees have reportedly held several meetings, including sessions in Nairobi and Addis Ababa, where officials discussed ways to strengthen cooperation and facilitate relations between communities on both sides.

Among the understandings reached, Irro said, was an agreement to facilitate the movement of people and commercial shipments between the two sides.

“Somaliland and Puntland established joint committees that meet regularly. The committees have met twice in Nairobi and Addis Ababa, and we agreed to facilitate the movement of people and shipments,” he said.

Security and Economic Interests

The cooperation described by Irro extends beyond political dialogue. Security appears to be one of its most important components, particularly in confronting terrorism, piracy and other cross-border security threats.

For communities living and trading across the wider region, improved cooperation could also have practical economic benefits. Easier movement of people, vehicles and commercial goods can strengthen trade and reduce disruptions along important transportation routes.

The emphasis on practical cooperation is particularly significant given the complex political history between Somaliland and Puntland. Rather than allowing sensitive political questions to prevent communication, the two sides appear to be creating mechanisms through which issues can be discussed directly.

A More Mature Approach

President Irro’s remarks suggest a pragmatic approach in which Somaliland and Puntland can cooperate where their interests overlap, even while more sensitive political questions remain unresolved.

Regular communication between officials, security cooperation and efforts to facilitate trade and movement can help reduce misunderstandings and strengthen confidence between neighboring communities.

If sustained, this approach could represent an important shift toward a more cordial, mature and interest-based relationship between Somaliland and Puntland—one focused less on political rhetoric and more on the practical needs of their people.

For now, President Irro’s message is clear: despite differences that may remain, Somaliland and Puntland can build common ground through dialogue, security cooperation, trade and people-to-people relations.
