Gwamba has been accused of playing a role in the decline of fellow musician Quest’s career, in a fresh claim that has stirred Malawi’s music scene.
The accusation comes from renowned music producer DJ Brown, owner of Royal Hustle The Factory, who says Gwamba contributed to Quest’s downfall.
Speaking on Podcast Malawi, Brown said he helped build Quest’s career by offering him free recording sessions under an agreement that they would share the proceeds once the artist became successful.
Brown said the partnership began to yield results after they produced Mzanga, a song he said helped introduce Quest to a wider audience.
He said Quest gained more airplay and started securing bookings as his popularity grew.
Brown said it was during this period that Gwamba approached Quest to contribute hooks to songs on an album he was preparing.
He said Quest brought the proposal to him, but he advised him to first engage Gwamba so they could agree on how Royal Hustle Entertainment would benefit from the collaboration.
Brown said he and Gwamba failed to reach an agreement, after which Gwamba allegedly convinced Quest to work with him independently.
According to Brown, Quest later travelled to Mangochi, where he recorded songs for Gwamba’s album.
Brown said Quest had told him that six songs would be recorded, but only one, Lipenga, was eventually released on the album.
He claimed that Quest’s involvement in the album benefited Gwamba more than it benefited Quest and described the development as one of the factors that contributed to the artist’s career decline.
