Uganda Hippos eye semifinal slot as they face Sudan

Uganda U20 Men’s National Football Team, the Hippos will be seeking to secure a berth in the semifinals of the ongoing CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers-CECAFA Zone as they take on Sudan on Saturday at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Following a perfect start that saw Uganda defeat minnows Djibouti 4-1, the target on Saturday will be about earning victory that will guarantee a spot in the final four.

Coach Laryea Kingston indicates, his charges are in the right shape and hopes they will be able to secure victory against Sudan.

“For us I think the boys are looking fresh ahead of the game against Sudan and I see everyone is ready. We want to win and make sure, we remain on course to achieving our target.” He said.

Sudan won 3-0 against Djibouti and will also be looking at earning maximum points to top Group C.

In the other games that will wrap up group stage business, Kenya will face South Sudan in Group A, both seeking for their first win after losing to Burundi. Victory for the two will not guarantee qualification to the semifinals but gives them hopes of earning the last slot.

It should be noted that this year’s tournament has nine teams, clustered into three groups of three teams each.

Table leaders in each group automatically qualify to the semifinals while the best second placed team scores the three groups gets the fourth semifinal spot.

In the final group game of the day, hosts Tanzania will take on Ethiopia who drew goalless against Rwanda. A draw will be enough for Tanzania to top the table in Group A.

Burundi has already qualified to the semifinals, having finished their group games, winning 4-2 against South Sudan and 2-0 against Kenya.
