ODM MPs Defy Oburu and Junet as Fresh Rift Erupts Over Ruto’s 2027 Deal

A fresh political storm is brewing within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) after three legislators openly backed President William Ruto’s re-election without demanding a formal power-sharing agreement, putting them at odds with senior party officials pushing for written guarantees ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The disagreement involves Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo, Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda and Nyando MP Jared Okello, who have supported unconditional political cooperation with Ruto.

The three legislators made their position clear during political engagements in Gem, Siaya County, on Saturday, October 31, 2026, where Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo also called on the Luo community to support the President without attaching conditions.

Odhiambo argued that political relationships should be built on trust and stronger social connections rather than written contracts. Ochanda and Okello similarly maintained that supporting the President should not depend on negotiating specific political rewards.

However, their position differs sharply from that of ODM leaders advocating for a formal agreement with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

ODM party leader Oburu Oginga has insisted that the party’s engagement with UDA must be guided by established party structures and negotiations. He has also maintained that full implementation of the 10-point agenda remains a non-negotiable requirement.

National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohamed and ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga have also supported structured negotiations, with demands for clear political commitments before the party enters a long-term electoral arrangement.

The disagreement centres on what ODM should receive in return for supporting Ruto’s re-election. Leaders pushing for a written pact argue that the party must secure clear commitments instead of relying entirely on political goodwill.

Wanga has advocated for a 50-50 power-sharing arrangement, including the Deputy President’s position, while Junet has maintained that any partnership should be documented in a formal coalition agreement.

Oburu has also warned against individuals attempting to dictate the party’s negotiating position, insisting that ODM has legitimate structures capable of determining its political future.

The emerging differences expose two competing political approaches within ODM: one favouring unconditional cooperation with Ruto and another demanding formal guarantees before committing the party to a long-term partnership.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the party’s ability to reconcile these positions could determine how effectively it negotiates with UDA and protects its political interests.
