FlySafair flight lands safely at George after technical indication

A FlySafair Boeing 737-800 landed safely at George Airport on Saturday after the crew received a technical indication during the aircraft’s approach.

Flight FA222 was travelling from Johannesburg to George. FlySafair spokesperson Kirby Gordon confirmed the incident to The Citizen and said the crew followed the appropriate operating procedures.

Aircraft removed from service

The aircraft landed without incident and was removed from service for inspection and maintenance.

An aviation group cited by the publication reported that the crew entered a holding pattern, completed the relevant checklists and conducted what appeared to be a partial-flap landing. It also reported that the pilots declared a PAN call, which signals an urgent situation and gives a flight priority but is below a Mayday distress call.

FlySafair confirmed a technical indication, but did not publicly identify the exact fault in the statement reported by the publication.

Emergency vehicles were reportedly placed on standby as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

Flaps help aircraft generate lift and drag at lower speeds during take-off and landing. A reduced-flap approach can require a higher landing speed and additional runway planning.
