Fernandes hat-trick fires Man United to 5-2 comeback win over Ipswich

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as Manchester United recovered from a goal down to thrash Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

After last weekend’s 2-0 defeat by fellow promoted side Hull City, United were again put under early pressure when Leif Davis gave Ipswich the lead.

But Fernandes restored parity before half-time, before converting a penalty after Jacob Greaves’ own goal had put United ahead.

The United captain completed his hat-trick from close range before turning provider for Bryan Mbeumo to cap an emphatic victory.

Ipswich punish United’s defensive lapses

Michael Carrick made four changes to the side that produced a poor display in their opening game, including handing Marcus Rashford his first United start in almost two years.

Rashford and the return of England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo provided United with greater energy, but Fernandes once again proved decisive in the final third.

United’s defensive frailties, however, remained a concern.

Senne Lammens was forced into an important one-on-one save from Julio Enciso after the Ipswich forward broke clear from a United corner.

Ipswich then took the lead in the 29th minute.

Abdul Fatawu raced past Luke Shaw down the right before delivering a dangerous cross that Davis brilliantly swept into the roof of the net.

The visitors almost doubled their advantage moments later when Davis found himself in space again, but his tame effort was comfortably saved by Lammens.

United responded through Fernandes, whose influence eventually turned the contest in the hosts’ favour.

The victory gives Carrick’s side a much-needed response after their opening-day defeat, although the defensive issues exposed by Ipswich will remain a concern despite the five-goal haul.
