Nigeria mourns Nollywood legend Olu Jacobs at 84

Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor and film executive Olu Jacobs at 84. His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced the news on Wednesday, describing him as “the Lion of Lufodo” and asking the public to respect the family’s privacy.

President Bola Tinubu praised Jacobs as a towering figure whose career covered theatre, television and film. He said the actor helped shape Nigeria’s entertainment industry and inspired generations with his talent and dedication.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Senator Shehu Sani also described his death as a major loss to the creative sector.

FG pauses King’s College concession deal for two weeks

The Federal Government has suspended the concession arrangement involving King’s College, Lagos, and its old students’ association for two weeks following talks with labour unions.

Education Minister Tunji Alausa also secured an immediate halt to industrial action and assured staff they would not face victimisation. A seven-member committee will review the deal, while policemen are to be withdrawn from the school.

Parents and teachers had protested against the proposed management takeover by KCOBA. Alausa said the arrangement aimed to fund the school’s modernisation while keeping government ownership. He added that the deal would not extend to other unity colleges.

Court allows Atiku to serve Tinubu through APC

A Federal High Court in Abuja has allowed ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar to serve court documents on President Bola Tinubu through the All Progressives Congress.

Justice Inyang Ekwo approved the request after Atiku’s lawyer, O.T. Omotayo-Ojo, explained that personal service of the originating summons had been unsuccessful.

Atiku and the ADC are asking the court to disqualify Tinubu and the APC from the 2027 presidential election over an allegedly forged NYSC discharge certificate. They also want INEC to remove their names from the election list. The defendants have yet to respond to the claims.

US imposes visa restrictions on some South Africans

Washington has introduced visa restrictions on certain South African nationals accused of race-based discrimination and encouraging imminent violence. Secretary of State Marco Rubio cited alleged discrimination against Afrikaners and other minorities.

The US also raised concerns about proposed land expropriation without compensation, discriminatory laws and chants allegedly promoting racial violence. Rubio said the restrictions followed South Africa’s failure to address the concerns.

South Africa rejected the allegations. Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola described the announcement as a misrepresentation of the country’s domestic policies. President Donald Trump has supported resettling Afrikaners in the US, citing national security and public safety.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ becomes America’s biggest film

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reportedly become the highest-grossing film in North American box office history, overtaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens after earning $936.773 million in 47 days.

The Marvel film previously surpassed Avengers: Endgame as the studio’s biggest domestic release. It has also made $2.45 billion worldwide, although Endgame remains ahead globally with $2.8 billion.

Set four years after Spider-Man: No Way Home, the film introduces Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey and hints at Marvel’s upcoming X-Men project. Its post-credits scene also appears to tease Avengers: Secret Wars, while critics and audiences have praised the movie.
