Wayne Rooney Urges Michael Carrick to Drop Bruno Fernandes Before Manchester United Captain ‘Explodes’

Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United manager Michael Carrick to consider dropping Bruno Fernandes from the starting line-up, warning that the midfielder’s growing frustration could eventually boil over if the club’s struggles continue.

The former United captain believes Fernandes is becoming increasingly fed up with the team’s performances and needs time away from the pressure of carrying the side. The 32-year-old Portuguese international has endured a difficult start to the campaign while also dealing with an injury that has affected him for around a month.

Speaking on Stick to United, Rooney suggested that allowing Fernandes to continue playing through the same frustrations could lead to an angry reaction from a player who has never been afraid to speak his mind.

Rooney Fears Fernandes Is Reaching Breaking Point

Rooney believes Fernandes is showing signs of frustration after repeatedly trying to drive Manchester United forward without seeing the results he wants.

The former England striker said the midfielder appeared to be approaching matches with the feeling that the same problems were happening all over again.

Rooney argued that Fernandes has carried a considerable burden for the team but warned that even the most influential players sometimes need to be removed from the starting line-up to regain their energy and perspective.

He believes the situation could become increasingly difficult if United continue to struggle and Fernandes remains at the centre of the team’s efforts.

Rooney also pointed out that the Portuguese playmaker is known for expressing his opinions openly, raising the possibility that his frustration could eventually lead to a public outburst.

Manchester United’s Midfield Problems Add to the Pressure

Rooney also highlighted United’s difficulties in midfield, arguing that the team needs three players in the centre of the pitch to compete effectively.

He believes the current setup has left United vulnerable to opponents who can outrun and outplay them, placing excessive demands on the players expected to cover large areas of the pitch.

Rooney specifically questioned whether Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans could provide enough mobility if they were left to operate as a two-man midfield.

In his view, the pair would struggle to cover the full width of the pitch against opponents with greater pace and movement.

His comments suggest that Fernandes’ individual difficulties cannot be separated from the wider tactical problems affecting United, with the team needing greater balance and support across midfield.

Fernandes Struggles to Match Last Season’s Influence

Fernandes has fallen short of his usual standards this season, with his creative output offering a sharp contrast to the form he displayed towards the end of the previous campaign.

He has created only one big chance so far, according to the figures cited in the report. That opportunity came through an excellent long pass to Bryan Mbeumo against Ipswich.

His average of 2.6 chances created per 90 minutes is also his second-lowest figure in any season since joining United.

Those numbers represent a significant decline from his outstanding finish to last season, when he scored or assisted 12 goals across the final 11 matches to help the club qualify for the Champions League.

Fernandes also finished the Premier League campaign with 12 assists, matching the joint record achieved by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

United have struggled to reproduce that level of performance this season, leaving Fernandes under increasing pressure as the team attempts to turn its results around.

Frustration Grows After Draw Against Tottenham

United’s disappointing 1-1 draw against Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday provided another example of the team’s current problems.

The Red Devils surrendered a 1-0 lead despite their opponents having only 10 men, leaving Fernandes visibly dejected as he walked away from the stadium.

His performance reflected United’s wider difficulties, with the midfielder failing to complete his first pass of the match until the 23rd minute.

The result added to a difficult run for the club, which had managed just one win in six Premier League matches and sat 13th in the table at the time of the report.

For Rooney, the combination of poor results, tactical shortcomings and Fernandes’ visible frustration makes it important for Carrick to consider whether the captain would benefit from a spell out of the starting team.

Carrick Defends Fernandes’ Commitment Despite Injury

Carrick has acknowledged that Fernandes has been playing through a physical problem but has defended the midfielder’s willingness to continue contributing.

The United manager explained that players frequently compete while managing minor injuries or other physical issues over the course of a season.

He said Fernandes had been able to play despite the problem and described that willingness as evidence of the midfielder’s commitment to the team.

Carrick added that the injury had largely improved, although some discomfort remained. He insisted it was not a major concern and said Fernandes had looked bright in training ahead of the next match.

The manager’s comments indicate that he does not currently view the injury as a significant obstacle to the midfielder’s involvement.

Carrick Insists No Manchester United Player Is Undroppable

Despite defending Fernandes’ commitment, Carrick has also made clear that no player is guaranteed a place in his team.

That stance leaves open the possibility of changes if performances do not improve, although there has been no confirmation that Fernandes will be dropped.

Rooney’s intervention adds to the debate over how Carrick should manage one of United’s most influential players during a difficult period.

The decision involves more than assessing Fernandes’ individual form. Carrick must also consider his fitness, the team’s midfield structure and the need to restore confidence across the squad.

For Rooney, giving Fernandes a break before his frustration escalates could be an important step towards helping both the player and the team recover. Whether Carrick acts on that advice remains to be seen as Manchester United look for a way out of their disappointing run.
