Northern Cape Sexual Offences Surge: Crime Stats Reveal 44.4% Increase in Rape Cases

KIMBERLEY, Northern Cape — The Northern Cape is experiencing a significant surge in sexual offences, with newly released crime statistics for April to June 2026 revealing an alarming 44.4% increase in rape cases. Provincial Police Commissioner Koliswa Otola and Safety MEC Limakatso Koloi jointly announced the quarterly figures, highlighting urgent concerns over the province’s growing danger to women and children.

The officials emphasized that statutory rape and child-to-child sexual assaults remain a critical concern. In some disturbing instances, both the offender and the victim are children of the same age. Authorities noted that when the perpetrator is older than the child victim, formal cases are opened. However, these crimes remain heavily underreported, as families often attempt to cover up such sensitive matters. Regarding a specific set of recent child rape cases highlighted by authorities, officials confirmed that while one case has been finalized and two remain pending investigation, the perpetrator is known in all instances, and the matters are actively progressing through the court system.

A major driver behind these violent and contact crimes, including domestic violence, is the rampant abuse of alcohol and drugs. Commissioner Otola and MEC Koloi stressed the critical need for comprehensive prevention programs, responsible liquor regulations, rehabilitation services, and community education. They also called for stronger interventions targeting the illegal sale and distribution of substances to protect young people from both substance abuse and recruitment into criminal activities.

To combat this, law enforcement has intensified compliance inspections at both legal and illegal liquor premises. During this reporting period, authorities successfully closed 4,232 illegal liquor establishments.

While the overall murder rate decreased—making it one of seven crime categories that saw a reduction during this period, with zero farm murders reported—attempted murder and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm increased sharply.

The provincial government and police leadership remain steadfast in their commitment to tackling the root causes of violent crime, urging communities to support stricter liquor enforcement and protective measures for vulnerable youth.
