Old order at the top, new faces making noise

DAR ES SALAAM: THREE rounds into the Mainland Premier League, the early standings are beginning to reveal the shape of the new season.

While Young Africans and Simba have maintained their expected positions at the top with three wins from three, the story immediately behind them is less predictable.

Azam and newly promoted Polisi Tanzania are unbeaten on seven points, while Geita Gold, another promoted side, have collected six points.

Mbeya City and Namungo have also made strong starts with six points each. At the other end, several clubs are already searching for a change in fortunes.

Kagera Sugar, also promoted to the top flight, have managed only one point and conceded nine goals in their opening three matches.

Coastal Union, JKT Tanzania, Pamba and Dodoma Jiji are among the other sides yet to establish themselves in the early stages of the campaign.

The opening rounds therefore present two contrasting pictures. The established order remains intact at the summit, but the newcomers are already making the league more competitive and providing some of the most interesting stories of the season.

Young Africans have made the strongest start of all. Three victories have given them nine points, but it is their goal difference that sets them apart.

They have scored 11 goals without conceding, leaving them with a plus-11 goal difference after only three matches.

That record points to a team that has not merely collected maximum points but has done so with a considerable margin.

Their attack has produced almost four goals per match. Three matches, however, remain a small sample. The quality of opposition will change as the season progresses, while injuries, squad rotation and other competitions can affect a team’s consistency.

For now, though, Yanga have done everything expected of a leading title contender and have given the rest of the league an early benchmark. Simba have matched Yanga’s nine points, although their start has taken a different form.

They have scored six goals and conceded two, giving them a plus-four goal difference. Unlike Yanga, their victories have not produced the same scoring margin, but the most important figure remains the same: three matches and three wins.

The disciplinary record surrounding Simba adds another dimension to their start.

The opening rounds have been marked by red-card incidents involving the club. Consequently, Simba Head Coach Steve Barker recently said that there is a need to address the issue, with the disciplinary problems resulting in the suspension of David Kameta, Anthony Mligo and Ibrahim Jabeer, thereby increasing the pressure on the players remaining on the pitch.

For the moment, however, Simba have managed to protect their results.

Their ability to collect points despite disciplinary setbacks has become part of the early story, but it is also an area that the club will need to address if the pattern continues.

A perfect winning record can hide problems that become more costly later in the season. Behind the two giants, the early table provides its first major surprise in Polisi Tanzania.

The newly promoted side have taken seven points from three matches, winning two and drawing one. That record puts Polisi third, level on points with Azam and only two points behind the two teams at the top.

Their start is significant because promoted clubs are often expected to spend their first months adjusting to the higher level of competition.

Polisi have so far avoided that pattern.

They have collected points immediately and placed themselves among the leading teams rather than at the bottom of the table.

Polisi Tanzania Head Coach Mbwana Makata has attributed his side’s good results and consistent run to the discipline shown by his players in both attack and defence.

“The discipline is very high in attacking and defending and if we maintain this foundation, we can achieve great success,” said Makata.

Their numbers also show a different approach from Yanga and Simba. Polisi have scored four goals and conceded three.

They have not produced the same attacking figures as the top two, but their seven points demonstrate the value of efficiency and results.

Maintaining that balance will be important as they encounter stronger opposition and the pressure of sustaining a position among the leading teams increases.

Azam have followed a similar points pattern, also taking seven points from three matches. Their unbeaten record places them firmly in the leading group and keeps the gap at the top narrow.

With only two points separating the top four, the early standings remain open enough for the order to change quickly.

The other major story among the newcomers is Geita Gold. They have taken six points from three matches and scored seven goals, with their most notable result coming in a 6-2 victory over fellow promoted side Kagera Sugar.

That result immediately put Geita among the teams attracting attention in the opening rounds.

Their seven goals show that they possess an attacking threat, although four goals conceded also indicate that there is room for improvement defensively.

The match against Kagera is particularly important because it provides a direct comparison between two teams that have made the step up to the top flight at the same time.

Their opening results could hardly be more different. Geita have six points and a positive goal difference. Kagera have one point and a negative six-goal difference.

The nine goals conceded by Kagera in three matches are the highest total in the table among the teams listed, giving them an immediate defensive problem to solve.

The 6-2 defeat was more than a heavy loss in isolation. It exposed the difficulty of competing at this level when defensive organisation breaks down.

Kagera have also conceded seven goals across their other matches, meaning the issue extends beyond one result.

Still, it would be premature to place Kagera in the relegation category after only three rounds.

The season is long, and newly promoted teams can improve as they adapt to the demands of the top flight.

What the early results do show is that Kagera have started with less stability than their fellow promoted clubs.

The difference between Polisi, Geita and Kagera is perhaps the clearest illustration of the early season.

All three entered the Premier League with the same broad objective of establishing themselves, but their first three matches have produced three very different outcomes.

Polisi have immediately joined the leading group. Geita have made their presence felt through goals and a major win.

Kagera are already dealing with pressure after conceding nine goals and taking only one point.

The performance of the promoted clubs also adds depth to the wider competition. It would be easy to assume that the established teams would occupy the top positions while newcomers would fight at the bottom.

The early table does not support such a simple division. Mbeya City and Namungo, both on six points, have also kept themselves close to the leading group.

Their records show that the competition outside the two giants is not settled. A few consistent results could move either side into the upper part of the table, while a run of defeats could have the opposite effect.

Singida Black Stars sit on four points after a win, a draw and a defeat. Their position represents the uncertainty of the middle section of the table, where teams are still searching for consistency and a clear direction.

At the bottom, the picture is more concerning but still developing. Mashujaa and Fountain Gate have three points each, while TRA United have two.

Pamba, Dodoma Jiji, Coastal Union, Kagera Sugar and JKT Tanzania have one point each. The defensive figures provide some of the clearest early warning signs.

Kagera Sugar have conceded nine goals, JKT Tanzania seven and Coastal Union six. Pamba and Dodoma Jiji have also struggled to turn their performances into points.

These teams cannot yet be labelled as relegation candidates with certainty. Three rounds are insufficient to make that judgment.

However, early deficits can become difficult to recover from if they continue for several weeks. The teams at the bottom therefore need results quickly, particularly against clubs that are likely to occupy the same part of the table later in the season.

The first three rounds have also produced a notable difference in how teams are winning and losing.

Yanga have combined maximum points with an outstanding defensive record and a large number of goals.

Simba have also taken maximum points but have done so in tighter matches and amid disciplinary concerns.

Polisi Tanzania have relied on efficiency to move into third, while Geita Gold have used attacking production to establish themselves among the teams with six points.

At the other end, Kagera Sugar’s nine goals conceded stand out as the clearest defensive concern. The early struggles of Coastal Union and JKT Tanzania add to a group of teams that need to improve their results before the gap begins to widen.

For the promoted sides, the opening three rounds have therefore offered both encouragement and a warning.

Promotion has allowed Polisi Tanzania and Geita Gold to compete immediately, and both have taken it.

Kagera Sugar, meanwhile, have been reminded of the difference between winning promotion and establishing themselves in the top flight. The established order has nevertheless remained strong.

Yanga and Simba have taken all nine available points and occupy the first two positions.

Azam remain unbeaten and close behind, confirming that the expected leading clubs have not surrendered their advantage.

But the early season has also shown that the competition will not be defined only by the traditional names.

Polisi Tanzania’s seven points have given the promoted side an unexpected place among the leaders. Geita Gold’s six points and 6-2 victory over Kagera have made them one of the early talking points.

Even Kagera’s difficult start is part of the wider story because it shows how differently newly promoted teams can experience the same challenge.

After three rounds, the table is not yet a prediction of where the teams will finish. It is, however, a first measure of momentum.

Yanga and Simba have preserved the old order at the top. Azam remain within touching distance. Polisi Tanzania and Geita Gold have added a new dimension to the leading group, while several clubs are already under pressure to change their fortunes.

The season is still in its opening chapter, but the first three rounds have made one thing clear: the giants have started as expected, but the new faces are already making noise.
