‘Like Our Eyes’: How Blind Nigerians Navigate Deadly Streets Amid Stigma, Infrastructure Failure

Navigating Nigerian streets is a test of patience for most commuters. For visually impaired citizens, it is a daily test of survival.

To mark the 2026 White Cane Safety Day, disability inclusion advocates are confronting a harsh reality: hostile public infrastructure, deep-seated societal stigma, and systemic failures.

Autonomy Over Forced Isolation



At the centre of independent mobility is the white cane—a tool advocates describe as a lifeline.

A Gender, Disability, and Social Inclusion expert, Sharon Okotie, narrated how mastering the white cane during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year in Lagos gave her full autonomy: “The white cane to a blind person is like our eyes. That is what gives us independence to move around in society… the confidence to step out on our own.”

However, that independence is often met with public suspicion.

The Director of Projects at the Initiative for Specially Abled Persons (ISAP), Maria Kazeem, points out that citizens regularly question why visually impaired adults travel unassisted: “People ask, ‘Why should you go out in the first place, let alone walk alone? Shouldn’t you go out with someone?'”

Kazeem stresses that expecting constant family accompaniment is unrealistic: “Adults with visual impairments—including parents—have responsibilities, just as relatives have their own careers and education to pursue.”

Deadly Infrastructure, Hit-And-Runs

Where societal attitudes do not restrict movement, physical infrastructure threatens lives. Open drainage gullies, uncovered manholes, and walkways blocked by street vendors turn basic transit into a gamble.

Kazeem revealed the human cost of this neglect.

“Tragically, some of our members have been knocked down by oncoming vehicles where drivers run away. We actually lost a member a few months ago as a result of a hit-and-run,” Kazeem said.

Ironically, while city authorities fail to protect vulnerable pedestrians, informal street youths (“area boys”) frequently step in to help visually impaired commuters cross chaotic roads and board buses.

Public Etiquette: Two Essential Questions

To bridge the gap between intention and impact, Okotie outlines a simple guide for the public: “Those are two very important questions that any average Nigerian can pose to a person with a disability or a blind person, and you never go wrong with that: ‘What do you need? How can I help?'”

Advocates are demanding accessible urban infrastructure, strict traffic enforcement, and sustained public education to ensure visually impaired Nigerians can navigate society safely and independently.
