Manchester United’s academy provided a couple of bright spots over the weekend.
While Manchester United’s first team continue to disappoint, the club’s academy can always be relied upon to provide some positivity.
Jaume Camacho on target
Manchester United’s under-18s drew 2-2 with Chelsea in the group stages of the Premier League Cup at the weekend. New signing David Eze made his debut as a substitute, while Kai Rooney also made his first appearance of the season.
In-form full-back Yuel Helafu netted United’s opening goal, his third of the season. United’s second came from attacking midfielder Jaume Camacho.
Camacho’s confident strike from the edge of the box was his second goal of the season, with his first coming in the previous PL Cup game against Charlton.
Last week, Camacho was picked out as Manchester United’s best young player in his age range, by The Guardian. This was the perfect way to follow that up, scoring an impressive goal in a tightly-contested game.
Finley McAllister’s first goal on loan
Manchester United under-21 regular Finley McAllister was sent out on his first ever loan move last month. McAllister, 20, signed for National League North sign Radcliffe FC on a short-term agreement.
McAllister scored his first ever competitive goal at the weekend to seal their 4-1 win over Scarborough.
He played all 90 minutes and struck his goal in stoppage time, arriving late in the box to hit a first time shot high into the net.
Writing on social media, he commented: “No feeling like it!,” in response to a club post, praising his ‘expertly finished’ goal.
McAllister and Camacho’s goals underlined the depth that United have in the academy, even if neither are currently in first team consideration.
