The Orms x Canon Promenade Exhibition is returning to Cape Town’s Sea Point Promenade for its seventh edition, offering South African photographers the opportunity to showcase their work in one of the city’s most iconic public spaces.
Over the past six years, the exhibition has brought photography beyond galleries and screens, allowing thousands of locals and international visitors to experience the work along the promenade.
Previous editions have explored themes including birds, wildlife and movement, landscapes, macro photography and black-and-white photography.
This year’s theme, The Art of Photography, asks a central question: when does a photograph become art?
The competition is looking for photographers who demonstrate a clear creative point of view, with entries judged on elements including composition, light, colour, perspective, subject, timing and editing.
Photographers can submit work across genres including portraiture, landscape, still life, architecture, abstract and conceptual photography.
Twenty photographs will be selected as finalists and displayed as large-scale artworks along the Sea Point Promenade, creating an outdoor exhibition showcasing different perspectives on South African photography.
The competition offers R100,000 in prizes.
The first prize, valued at R65,000, includes a Canon EOS R8 body with an RF 28–70mm f/2.8 lens and a R10,000 ORMS Print Room voucher.
The second prize, valued at R20,000, includes a Canon EOS R50 Creator Kit and a R5,000 ORMS Print Room voucher, while the third prize, valued at R15,000, includes a Canon PowerShot V1 and a R5,000 ORMS Print Room voucher.
According to the organisers, the exhibition’s previous six editions featured 120 photographers, attracted tens of thousands of entries and awarded more than R500,000 in prizes.
Photographers can enter up to five images at a time, with unlimited entries permitted. Images must be submitted in landscape format as JPEG files of no more than 5MB each.
Finalists will be asked to provide high-resolution TIFF files for A0-size prints. Watermarks will not be accepted on final prints.
The competition is being presented as an opportunity for photographers to move their work beyond the screen and gallery wall and into the public landscape.
