BREAKING: Canadian City Council Votes to Consider Renaming Trump Avenue “Taco Avenue”
Trump renamed Lake Ontario “Lake America.” A Canadian city council responded by considering renaming a street after him into a joke about his own trade war retreats.
Ottawa City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to take the first step toward renaming Trump Avenue, a residential street in the city’s Central Park neighborhood that has carried the president’s name for about 25 years. The vote came just one day before Trump signed his executive order on Lake Ontario.
The suggestions for a replacement name are not subtle. Councilor Tim Tierney told CNN options include Obama Avenue, Canada Avenue, Beaver Avenue, Gulf of Mexico Avenue, Canada Goose Avenue, Pelosi Avenue, Rosie O’Donnell Avenue, and Taco Avenue, a reference to the acronym “Trump Always Chickens Out.”
This isn’t the neighborhood’s first attempt. Residents voted on the same question back in 2021, splitting 21 to 21 with 20 not voting at all. Tierney says opposition then wasn’t necessarily about defending Trump. Some residents simply didn’t want the hassle of updating their addresses.
For the name to actually change now, more than half the residents would need to support it, followed by a public engagement process, with nothing expected to move until after municipal elections in late October.
Tierney was careful not to let the joke overshadow the real fight. “The semantics of names, we can save that for another day in the future,” he said. “Right now, I think our focus has to remain on trade and tariffs, something that this is just nothing more than a distraction from.” Then he added the line that landed the hardest. “We see the president doing something the same and it’s tired. Stop with the lame name game and let’s get back to the table.”
Trump wanted to win a map fight. Canada handed him a punchline instead.
