Murewa was rocked by a daring early-morning bank robbery on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, after armed robbers allegedly used explosives to blow open a CBZ Bank ATM and escaped with US$30 000 (approximately R479 700) and 15 000 ZiG (approximately R9 000).
The robbery reportedly happened shortly after 2am at the CBZ Bank branch in Murewa, Mashonaland East Province. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) had not released an official statement by the time of publication.
According to ZBC News, five suspects were allegedly involved in the robbery.
Two reportedly attacked a security guard at the CBZ branch while three others moved towards nearby premises, including CABS Bank and Teachers Hardware.
The security guards at those premises reportedly escaped unharmed.
The suspects then allegedly turned their attention to the CBZ ATM.
The robbers allegedly used explosives to force open the ATM before fleeing with the cash.
The reported haul was US$30 000 (approximately R479 700) and 15 000 ZiG (approximately R9 000).
ZBC News reported that police were expected to provide more information about the incident.
The investigation is expected to establish how the robbery was carried out and identify those responsible.
