Mighty Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson Shadric Namalomba has defended President Peter Mutharika’s first year in office, saying the administration has made strides despite inheriting economic problems from its predecessor.
Namalomba says the government has improved food availability, reduced inflation and introduced free education, among other measures.
He says the administration inherited foreign exchange shortages and fuel scarcity, which remain challenges the government is working to address.
Namalomba says the DPP expects to make further progress in tackling the outstanding problems over the next 12 months.
Meanwhile, Political Science Association of Malawi general secretary Mavuto Bamusi has described the government’s first year as a mixed bag.
Speaking to Zodiak Online, Bamusi said there had been progress in some areas, including reductions in the prices of some goods, but challenges remained.
He cited foreign exchange and fuel shortages, as well as unreliable water and electricity supplies.
Bamusi also called for stronger action against corruption, saying some statutory corporations were undermining the government’s vision.
Namalomba, however, says the DPP remains confident in its record during its first year and is focused on addressing the challenges inherited from the previous administration.
